Three cities named as finalists for 2012 Republican convention

The Republican National Committee named three cities on Friday as potential hosts for the 2012 Republican National Convention: Phoenix, Tampa and Salt Lake City.

The finalists emerged after multiple cities submitted bids to the RNC by the committee's January 15 deadline.

"These cities submitted three very strong bids, so all three are in contention," Holly Hughes, an RNC member from Michigan who chairs the RNC Site Selection Committee, told CNN. "Hosting a convention is a huge deal. A city has to raise multiple millions of dollars, but they also get the benefit of showcasing their city and bringing in revenue."

A 12-member RNC Site Selection Committee will visit the cities in late March and early April to meet with local officials and evaluate the potential sites - and will then make their final recommendation to the RNC. The full 168-member committee will vote to select the host city at the RNC's summer meeting in July.

"Phoenix, Tampa, and Salt Lake City are all amazing American cities and I wish them the best of luck with their bids," RNC chairman Michael Steele said in a statement...

The Team of Mitt Romney-care that WORKED hard
to throw Election2008 to Obama should not be rewarded,
if the GOP is to have an iota of credibility
and integrity.

The fools should poke bammie in the eye and hold it in Las Vegas.

I really wonder about the GOP some most times.

Not unless they want to test us to see how many of us really mean it when we say we won’t vote for Mitt Romney. I haven’t skipped a Presidential election in my life, but I will NEVER vote for Mitt Romney.

Too bad Las Vegas didn’t make the cut due to it’s mayor trashing Obama recently.

Salt Lake will be the best for that time of the year. Tampa will be in Hurricane season so it would require a contingency location and planning. Phoenix is about 110F at this time and it would be miserable.

“You can see that the McCain and Romney people are tightly in control of the DNC.”

Every time I drove through there my turn signals stopped working... That’s got to be important.

Do you really think that's unique to Utah? Come to Pennsylvania for an encore or tell me anywhere people actually use turn signals.

If the cops would be half as enthusiastic about ticketing non-signalers as they are speeders, maybe something would change.

They chose all the homes of the RINOs.

Tampa => Jeb Bush

The RINOs must be purged and sent back to the DNC.

Tampa will be in Hurricane season so it would require a contingency location and planning.

Historically and statistically speaking, Tampa has a 1 in 25 chance of a direct hit - less than other areas of Florida. Compare that to Miami, which has 1 in 6 chance and Pensacola with a 1 in 7 chance.

The last direct major hurricane hit (Cat 3) was 1921, the last direct hurricane hit (Cat 1) was in 1946, and the last indirect hurricane hit (Cat 2) was Hurricane Gladys in 1968. No, it doesn't mean Tampa won't get a direct hit again, but odds are Miami will get hit sooner :-) The main thing you have to worry about in Tampa is LIGHTNING!

Downtown Tampa is awesome - the Convention Ctr is surrounded by some of the best hotels, parking garages, the St. Pete Times Forum, Ybor City is nearby, you can't beat the variety of restaurants.

Transportation is great too...you can catch a hotel shuttle, a public bus, a trolley, or you can walk to most places. I've attended the Florida Music Educators Association convention in Tampa for the past 3 years and I've always felt safe walking or driving in downtown Tampa.

Tampa makes sense. But SLC or PHX? Why? Both states are going to go COMFORTABLY for the Republicans. Why not look at a state like OH or NJ or even PA? Pick a state where the presence of a convention might actually make a little difference.
