Sarah Palin takes on Hollywood: Fans are flocking to The Blind Side, it's heading for Oscar success
The London Times ^ | February 21, 2010 | Christopher Goodwin

If there’s anything Hollywood appreciates less, or fears more, than the inexorable rise of Sarah Palin, it’s the success of the movie The Blind Side. Heading into the Oscars, Avatar may be the techno-wow box-office behemoth, The Hurt Locker the critically acclaimed scrapper, but it’s The Blind Side that has truly blindsided the film industry. To the head-scratching consternation of West Coast movie execs, God-fearing “red state” Americans in their millions have been storming cinemas to see it. The film cost just $35m, has taken nearly $250m since the end of November and is a shock smash hit.

Based on a true story, The Blind Side stars Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy, a wealthy supermom who saves a homeless black teenager from a life of almost certain crime and crack, turning him into a star American-football player. She does it with the ramrod power of her Christian faith, taking him into her prayerful family. There, she stuffs him with copious amounts of fast food — her husband, Sean, played by the country singer Tim McGraw, owns a number of Taco Bell franchises — and outsize servings of the American Dream. And just as Julia Roberts sported a push-up bra for added sexual frisson in Erin Brockovich, Bullock’s bum-hugging pencil skirts and hunky husband hint that prayer may not be the only reason she gets on her knees.

The Blind Side has attracted audiences Hollywood is normally clueless about reaching, “that huge swathe of the American public that attends church every Sunday”, according to the LA Times. Before the film was even released, some 23,000 pastors had downloaded information about it from a special promotional website aimed at religious conservatives, including precooked sermons and video clips that could be used in churches.(continued)

Sounds a lot like how The Passion of the Christ took them by surprise several years ago.

God help the Hollywood crowd. If they would just start making more movies like this, and movies about success and glory, instead of loss and anger, they would be successful again.

Of course, the fact that it is a true story, and the "hero", Michael Oher can be seen playing left OT for the Ravens on any given Sunday, has nothing to do with it. At least for the pansy-asses of "The Industry," who are only dimly aware the NFL exists.

Score one more for the cultural divide.

The left/Holywood types view the rest of the country (except New York) as a vast wasteland. Bunch of crazy Teabaggers.

The success of this movie shows that Christian intervention through local churches and individuals is the solution to poverty. Liberals give in far lower percentage than conservatives and believe that taxes are required rather than Christian charity.

The movie is a story of a typical Christian Republican mother whose husband is a successful businessman who helps a young man at a critical time in his life.

For all the TALK from the left who is in Haiti doing the real work? Who was there BEFORE the earthquake took place?

The left believes that mandated taxes and government offer the only solution because of their own greed and failure to offer themselves to help those in need.

Sam Goldwyn warned them: "I don't make "message" movies. If you want a message, call your answering service."

I’m not really sure how Palin fits into this article on Hollywood.

It’s a Jesus thing. I have not seen the movie, but Hollywood hates the mention of either name.

I wonder how Sandra knew how to play a conservative republican. It certainly does not play to Hollywood stereotypes.

Minor quibble: Michael seemed to play right tackle all year, except for brief occasions when the starting left tackle (#71, Jared Gaither, who at 6'9" and 340# is even bigger than Oher) could not go. The Ravens are blessed with two such tackles.

That said, it certainly appears Oher has every necessary qualification for eventually becoming as good a blindside left tackle as there is in the game. His first move back off the line of scrimmage at the snap is surely the quickest I've seen in over fifty years of watching.
