McItaly burger controversial in home country

Italy's agriculture minister defended his sponsorship of McDonald's new all-Italian burger Monday amid criticism that he is selling out to a multinational corporation and sacrificing Italy's culinary reputation in the process.

Minister Luca Zaia has argued that McDonald's new McItaly burger — using all Italian beef, Asiago cheese and artichoke spread — will pump €3.5 million ($4.8 million) more a month into the pockets of Italian farmers grappling with tough economic times.

But for a country that gave birth to the Slow Food movement a quarter-century ago and prides itself on its varied, delicious and healthy cuisine, Zaia's enthusiastic support of McDonald's has been hard to swallow.

Mm, that sounds like it would be good. What would it take to bring it to America?

Italy’s culinary reputation is wrapped up in pizza. So what’s so bad about a Luigi Burger?

My grandfather is Italian. Used to tell me that we’ invented capuccino., espresso, macaroni etc but Italy does not get a cent in royalities. If anyone is in L.A., try Palermo’s. The best in L.A.

Looks tasty. Though... to be fully Italian seems like it needs a big ‘ol tomato on it.

Never been to Palermo's, but I'm always looking for good Italian eateries in L. A. For good sausage or meatball sandwiches, check out the Eastside Market, an Italian-owned deli located in Chinatown at 1013 Alpine St., near Figueroa.

Thanks, will do. The smaller the place, the better. I live in Hollywood so they’re close by. Miceli’s, supposedly the oldest in Hollywood is fantastic.

If you are ever at Universal Studios/Citywalk, word of advice on Buca. The entrees/dessert suck, it’s pricey but the actual dish is superb.

I thought it was Yankee Doodle who stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni.

Wasn’t it Marco Polo, come to think of it, who found ancient Chinese noodles and brought them back to Europe? And the Old World knew nothing about the tomato until Christopher Columbus got them in the new world, and even then they were daring each other who would eat it!

The potato was from the New World as well.
