GOP cool to Obama call for two-party health talks

Republicans gave a chilly reception Monday to President Barack Obama's invitation to discuss health care in a bipartisan, televised setting later this month, part of the White House effort to revive the stalled legislation.

The House and Senate GOP leaders said Obama and his fellow Democrats must shelve their long-debated health care bill, which was on the verge of becoming law until Republican Scott Brown won a special Senate election in Massachusetts last month. The White House says Obama has no plans to do so but is willing to hear Republicans' ideas.

Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the top Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said Monday that the first question for Obama should be: "Did you lie about moving forward on malpractice reform?" He was alluding to the president's earlier remarks about possibly curbing malpractice lawsuits, which is not included in the health bills passed separately by House and Senate Democrats in December.

In the first major move to jump-start his health care agenda after his party's loss of a filibuster-proof Senate majority, Obama on Sunday invited GOP and Democratic leaders to discuss possible compromises in a half-day, televised gathering on Feb. 25.

It comes amid widespread complaints that Democrats' efforts so far have been too partisan and secretive.

The meeting's prospects for success are far from clear. GOP leaders insisted on starting from scratch. But many Democrats want to use their party's remaining parliamentary muscle to enact their plans with as few changes as possible.

"If we are to reach a bipartisan consensus, the White House can start by shelving the current health spending bill," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky...

Before they agree to sit down with the Rats, Obama needs to put it in writing that the Repubs were locked out of previous discussions, barring that the Reps are tools.

Nothing good can come of this.

Very simple, tell Obama to scrap to current plan or it will be filibustered anyway and then start over with the GOP in the process and with CSPAN cameras on. There will be NO negotiating pork barrel deals.

Tell him to go scratch. Why should the GOP set themselves up as scapegoats and give Obama more TV time to say “he tried”? Besides, wasn’t he supposed to be talking about jobs now? Tell Barry he they are going to have a jobs summit and he can come if he wants to but bring a notebook and take notes. There will be a test.

Maybe even the Republicans in Congress are finally recognizing that all Obama wants to use them for is choreographed photo ops where he can stand up there and lie to them and expect them to show decorum and let him get away with it lest they be ripped apart by the media.

Let him keep his bogus "bi-partisanship". He didn't bother with it when he didn't need them because "I won".

I sincerely hope Repubs don't fall for this. Why would you sit in front of tv cameras and talk with a Dem, when they are talking they are lying. Just tell them to send the proposals over, mark them up, put them on line and send back to the Dems. Don't need the posturing!

After saying that healthcare was such an emergency that numerous deadlines had been set to enact the legislation..........

After saying that the people who created the mess need to sit down and shut up and not do a lot of talking, so he can clean up the mess...............

After saying that these negotiations should be on C-Span, only to see the latest Senate bill enacted in secrecy............

After all that has happened, NOW, Obama wants to slow everything down so that we can have input from the Republicans??????????

Dear Journalists, How about you all finally do your jobs. For example,

Mr President, You are calling for “bipartisanship”. Critics say your definition of “Bipartisan” is everyone in Congress simply bowing to what you want.

What elements of the Democrat plan are you willing to scrap to get that GOP support? Which elements of the GOP plan are you willing to fight your own party on to implement?

compare this piece to the FOX leftist News propaganda piece posted earlier.

Old Wendell Gobber at Fox Leftist News is liar!

I talked to Rep Camp office in MICH and they stated the DC offices are closed and no one has said they are willing to meet about health-care !
The lefties buried at Fox are twisting and lying as usual .

I sent this to McConnell and Boehner. Not that they give a carp about what I think. I feel better myself.

Senator McConnell,

I urge you to talk to the republican caucus about the trap that seems to have been laid by Obama. This HC meeting O wants is nothing more then to diminish your standing with the American people.

I am a strong Tea Party supporter and we have moved a profound trend toward the conservatives. To let O parade you into a meeting and yak for 75% of the time is foolish. Demand no tv's. And be careful in agreeing to anything he promotes. We are getting into a November win position, and any mistakes the Republicans make at this meeting will be a disaster.

This all should be handled in committee first. Not the executive branch looking for approval of his adgenda.

Sincerely,

Swen

Former USMC

Dick Lugar. What a name. If his last name was Cass, he would probably call himself Jack.

Absolutely right. The Rs have nothing to gain by enabling Obama to meet his promise to “put this on CSPAN” and they know damn well he will only use this to make them look like obstructionists.

It’s a sucker play.
