Congressman Henry Brown's "Stand Up for Christmas" resolution is just another example of Republican politicians' long history of exploiting social and cultural issues to distract voters from their big government records.

The premise of this article is retarded. Social issues are “distraction”? What, are you not smart enough to think about more than one thing at a time?
Not you, personally, I’m referring to the author of the article.
Message to Congressional Republicans: I would agree to ban Christmas if you actually managed to get your act together enough to actually cut spending.
Of course some “R”s use social issues as cover. Social conservatives are to the “R”s as blacks are to the “D”s. Meanwhile, socialism increases all around.
The sooner people realize that government grows as fast or faster when you try to legislate what substances someone can put into their body as when someone hands out welfare, the sooner we can get back this being a free country again.
On a side note: I’m not illiterate. What’s with all these damn youtube videos? Why are we catering to the illiterate, ignorant Millenials?
Message to Congressional Republicans:
1) Small Government works best
2) reform the DAMN tax code
3) Support conservative social issues but don’t insist on Government being involved in our lives, our bodies or our homes.
The Left (and some useful idiots on the Right) are very deliberately attacking the idea of social conservatism. They've messed up many churches, they've messed up our schools, they've messed up the family structure, they've messed up the role of men in society. All of this has been done very deliberately by the Left.
Now they want to convince Conservatives that Conservatives could return to power, if Conservatives would just give up on Social Conservatism entirely. Yeah, yeah -- focus on fiscal conservatism and nothing else. That's how we can win!
Don't fall for it. Social Conservatism is absolutely essential if we want to defeat the Left. We cannot withdraw from that battle.
I'm glad to see that you accept that social conservatism is small-government friendly!
Tipper Gore and the PMRC. Now THAT’S using social conservatism as a cover.
I agree with your sentiments. I don’t see the point to a video that shows me still images and has a voice telling me a story. I’d rather just see text with or without the photos. I’m just thankful that they are usually labeled ‘video’ in the headline so I can ignore them the vast majority of the time.
>> Does he have a point? <<
No. He’s too clever by half. The forces that unite the social conservative with the libertarian are much stronger than the ideological disputes that will always exist between them. Libertarians, social conservatives, small business people, the investor class and the elderly are natural allies — not enemies — because they all must confront the unpleasant truth that government is now their chief enemy:
1. Government has been the enemy of the investor class ever since FDR and the New Deal.
2. Government became the enemy of small business during the 1960’s and 1970’s thanks to things like OSHA, EPA and the ever-rising minimum wage.
3. Government became the enemy of many religious people thanks to the ACLU and SCOTUS, when things like prayer in schools and Christmas-time manger scenes on public property were declared illegal. Then it further alienated practicing Catholics, evangelical Protestants and orthodox Jews, thanks to Roe v. Wade and the judicial “legalization” of homosexual marriage.
4. Government became the enemy of the white southerner as a result of to Brown v. Board and the numerous civil rights acts, then the enemy of the nothern white working class thanks to affirmative action.
5. Government will become the enemy of the elderly and a newly emboldened enemy of personal autonomy the moment Øbambicare passes into law.
So let’s keep our eyes on the ball and not be distracted by the likes of a smarty-pants Youtube poster who would like nothing better than to drive a wedge between the liberterian and the social conservative.
And they are treated the same way.
Ping!

I don’t argue that certain aspects of it can be compatible. The author’s point is that many so called ‘Conservatives’ use SoCon issues as a copout to divert attention away from their non-conservative leanings. Lindsay Graham is a prime example. In this regard, he’s 100% correct.
I slightly disagree with him on the Merry Christmas issue, but on everything else he’s spot-on.
Social Conservatives continually get exploited by Constitution-hating, big-government politicians to further an agenda that it is anything but Conservative. If any one of these politicians ever successfully dealt with the issues they claim to be representing, they’d have nothing to wrap themselves in to get re-elected.
Actually, the full text is here:

and the title is a little more appropriate “The Constitution or the Culture War?”
And the social conservative's solution is to get the government involved. Brilliant idea! (sarc)
