Swine Flu Kills 19 Kids In A Week

114 children have died in U.S.; widespread in all but 2 states

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

ATLANTA (AP) | Swine flu has caused at least 19 more children's deaths - the largest one-week increase since the pandemic started in April, health officials said Friday.

At least 114 children have died from swine flu complications since the spring, up from 95 reported a week earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to release the last of its stockpile of liquid Tamiflu for children because of reported shortages of the swine flu treatment. Enough to treat an estimated 234,000 children is being released.

"We didn't see a reason to keep it in reserve when we have so much illness in children now," CDC Director Thomas Frieden said at a news conference.

The government sent some of the stockpile to states in the spring and some more - about 300,000 courses - earlier this month. To replenish the supply, the government has ordered more from Tamiflu's manufacturer, Switzerland-based Roche Holdings, Dr. Frieden added. But that medicine is not expected to come in until early next year.

Pharmacies are able to convert adult Tamiflu capsules - which are in good supply - to pediatric doses, he added.

Dr. Frieden encouraged pharmacists to take adult Tamiflu capsules and, with careful measures, put it into a syrup palatable for children. To help make pediatric capsules palatable for children, he said, parents could consider mixing the contents with a sweet liquid such as chocolate syrup.

lots of fluids, and rest will get you over the flu quicker than all the tamiflu in the world.

Chicken Soup, and healthy diet will protect you from getting it in the first place.

Of course, there's no media (read lib) outrage.

Obama really IS to blame on the vaccine govermnent meddling, so since he can't drag "W" back into the White House on this one and beat him up, thus, no children are dying, it's not our fault we could only deal with Bush vaccine makers, etc.

The usual lib spin -- who ya gonna believe me (Obama) or your own lyin' eyes?

As a professional in the Pharma industry, I can honestly say that these examples of compounding are not very effective. And believe me, pharmacists at Kroger, Walgreens and CVS will not do it. Their corporate masters will forbid it.

Wondering just how many people who "think" they have the flu have been tabulated as swine flu (H1N1) pandemic victims?

CBS News on swine flu - fail!

The central claim is that CDC stopped testing for swine flu hastily and without advance notice to the states:

If you've been diagnosed "probable" or "presumed" 2009 H1N1 or "swine flu" in recent months, you may be surprised to know this: odds are you didn’t have H1N1 flu.

Probably none because seasonal flu hasn’t started yet.

A majority of these are actually dying of secondary infections like MRSA.

I'll bet at least that many kids have died this year at the hands of crazed mothers or fathers.....at least that many killed by drunk drivers....at least that many that have died of cancer.....

its very sad when a child dies...or anybody...but we should things in perspective.....

if we didn't have the best health care in the world, thousands might have died by now.....

Any idea why there isn't enough pediatric Tamflu around? Considering the flu has been known from the start to hit some kids hard, I would think it would have been stockpiled this summer. A case can be made why vaccine isn't available, but Tamiflu for kids? Good grief, what are they doing at HHS and the CDC?

Recall a few years ago, after the media screamed Roche was not making enough Tamiflu, the company over expanded capacity and warned it couldn't afford to make what wasn't being sold.

Oh, that’s not good news. I’ve been assuming our family had it already. Twice we all had symptoms so similar to H1N1 that I figured we had H1N1, although the doctor and pediatrician shrugged it off and we weren’t tested for it.

You bet they will. This "do it yourself" formulary stuff is just begging for a nasty lawsuit.
