WASHINGTON - She's poised to become the best-selling author in the United States, has a devoted base of conservative supporters and is considered a front-runner to lead the Republicans into the next election in 2012 - and yet key party strategists are tormented by the popularity of Sarah Palin.
The very notion of a Palin candidacy has been derided in recent days by some of the brightest minds in the Republican party even as the former governor of Alaska outlines her policies on Afghanistan, energy and other issues of national importance.
"Were she to be the nominee, we could have a catastrophic election," Steve Schmidt, John McCain's presidential campaign manager last year, said recently.
He was backed by Mike Murphy, a Republican media consultant who also made a point of chastising Schmidt for his role in Palin's rise to international prominence to begin with.
"Steve Schmidt correct about Sarah Palin and '12," Murphy said by way of his Twitter feed. "Shame he didn't feel same way a year ago when he was lobbying McCain to choose her as VP."
John Weaver, McCain's closest political adviser for years, also weighed in earlier this week about a Palin candidacy.
"It would surely mean a political apocalypse is upon us," he said.
Yet from her unlikely pulpit - Facebook, and not the governor's office in Wasilla, Alaska - Palin is getting her message out on everything from health-care reform and energy while assailing President Barack Obama for his position on Afghanistan. Many of her 900,000-plus "friends" on the social networking site are cheering her every word.

I take it “Key” Republicans are RINO’s?
The only “Catastrophe” I see is the Commie in the White House right now who is hell bent on destroying this country.
>> Steve Schmidt, John McCain’s presidential campaign manager last year
That’s quite a resume, Steve. Now, refresh my memory. Didn’t you and your boy Johnnie LOSE BIG TIME? Isn’t that somewhat YOUR responsibility?
Why should I give a rat’s patoota what you think?
Best minds. Riiiight.
Fixed it.
Sarah wiil be Sarah tomorrow, who knows what the RINOs will be doing?
Palin is superior to the Obamaloon in every measurable way: intellect, experience, morality, etc., etc., etc.
Period.
I spit on the president. I pee on the president. I drop my trousers and take an Obama on the president.
Too bad McCain didn't know any of those people either
I did but it was a waste of time.
I have a brain and saw what the party did
to Sarah in the election, they still cannot
come to grips with the fact that if not for
her, the McCain Campaign would have gone done
in flames to create an Obama mandate, something
which we could ill afford, it’s bad enough that
he won.
McCain and the party should get down on their
knees everyday and thank divine providence for
a candidate like Mrs. Palin.
The only reason McCain came within 8 points of ‘The One’ was because of Palin.
Why is it when I see McCain, Schmidt, RINO, I seem to always say losers.
And so RNC how is that Steele fellow working out for you? Is he still on-board? Shouldn’t he be doing something or another about now?
I think the media are sure pushing Pawlenty hard ... He has a 56% approval rating in wacky leftists Minnesota, I bet that means he is a real conservative ...
No JUANnabies.
One single quote from a Palin supporter in the whole freaking article. Thats supposed to be journalism?
in a pigs eye
GOOD!
You said it exactly. RINOs are a big problem eclipsed only by the Marxist in chief and his crappy commie sidekicks.
"We" the RINOs because they would find themselves again in the minority in a party they thought was their own. The RINOS(used to be Rockefeller Republicans) are much more comfortable as a minority party in Congress that gets the Presidency from time to time and can pick off pork along with the Democrats. They like to represent a genteel "opposition" as token guests at Democrat cocktail parties. They are terribly uncomfortable as members of a majority party that is expected to accomplish things, especially conservative things.
I voted for McCain, ONLY because of Palin. I believe Obama is a disaster for America, but only slightly better than McCain would have been. THe only reason the election was within 6%, was Sarah !
Looks like the “key” republicans are finding out that they ain’t “key”.
I just wish these clowns would hike up their little girl panties, find their stones and tell us outright that they don’t want conservatives in their party.
Unfortunately, they’re lying manipulative bottom feeding scum.
Worse than the last election???....I dont think so. Screw Mclame and the GOP....GO SP.
Sarah Palin is definitely a rising star. Do I think she’s as grounded in conservative principles as the typical FReeper? Frankly, I don’t know. However, I would vote for her in an instant over McCain or any of his other so-called moderates. In fact, I will NOT vote for a RINO again. McCain was the last, and the only reason I voted for him was Palin.
So, moderates and RINOs, think twice before you give us another McCain, Romney, or wishy washy middle-of-the-roader, because myself and others (who have been consistent Republicans until now) will WALK.
Maybe Beck is right. An Obama-type presidency may be necessary from time to time to wake Americans up. McCain would have already signed some of the things we are still fighting Obama on. No more RINO scum!
So we have the Dem-Commies and the RINO-Commies fighting each other over who will be our dictator and Sarah who believes in individual liberty and freedom. I am not surprised at who hates her. They are all my enemies.
pretty much the way I see it, McLame wouldn’t have got more than 25% of the Vote if it were not for Sarah Palin. I believe this Schmidt clown was an advisor to Governor Shriver also. These people are the reason I registered as an independent years ago. When The Conservatives in the Party stand up and remove fools like Arnold Shriver and Juan McLame, I will rejoin and even Contribute. Until then only Candidates get my money. granted most of them are Republicans, like Tom McClintock who was my rep for 20 years in assembly and senate here in Ca. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE AMERICA WANTS not MCLAME and ROCKEFELLERS,SHRIVER...... remember Arnold only plays a Man in the Movies.
Look, I don’t hold it against guys like Schmidt, Weaver et al - you just have to realize what they are - they’re political hacks. Hired hands. Guys who have to say and do whatever it takes to get the next gig. Whoring may be a word for it but I think most whores are have higher standards.
Schmidt knows he has no future with Palin, so he’s got nothing to lose and potentially something to gain by taking this position.
Just don’t confuse him with a person who is important, has impact, or any ideas worth listening to. He is what he is.
I’m just p!ssed I didn’t take a whole boatload of consumer electronic products to Alaska to be autographed!
Well, the question is, WILL she do the hard work and organizing necessary for a successful campaign? And WILL she appeal to independents? Reagan did both. So far, she hasn’t even served one full term as governor of Alaska, or persuaded the father of her grandchild to make the mother an honest lady.
These are legitimate questions. I like her, too. She actually persuaded me to cast a vote in 2008. But I’m not an independent, wobbly voter.
While I was waiting for my radiation treatment today, I foolishly picked up an old Newsweak and read Howard Fineman’s take on Sarah and comparing her unfavorably to Nixon. What a pompous ass that old dub is.
The joke is the left really really believes (and quite a few cino’s) that SP will drive a stake through the conservative movement. Many on the left believe this so strongly they will turn out in drove’s during the primaries and vote for Palin. They underestimate the amount of revoltion by many average folk in BHO.
All these RINOs and professional republicans are going
to be in for the shock of their lives as Sarah takes
a page from Reagan and actually has a conversation
with the American voter.
I think Sarah learned a lot the first time out
and will put it to good use in the coming struggle.
If the party wises up I will do all I can to support
her and raise the funds needed for a successful campaign.
If not, then my support will go where ever Mrs. Palin goes
I read the whole article. The pundits tried to liken Mrs. Palin to Ronald Reagan. He had many, many years to hone his ideas..America First and Foremost. Mrs.. Palin has her ideas of America. Pres. Reagan ran against a president who did know splat from squad...Carter ran this country into debt with interest rates in to 20% area and higher. Mrs. Palin is not YET running for the Presidency...she is just an American citizen with her views of America as compared to this president administration, which is communist. Mrs. Palin’s view is America the Republic, where each and every person has a right to freedom of speech, free to live and work as they please, preserve the Judeo/Chrisitan beliefs this country was founded on. We don’t know, yet, who will be in the campaign for president...there will be some of the OLD standbys and a couple of new one. What interests me the most in the article are the those on McCain’s payroll who are now bad mouthing Mrs. Palin. He asked her to help him in the campaign...and a lot of us wouldn’t have tuned into his campaign had it not been for her. Now he is letting his campaign “staff” stiff her. Whata guy.
Palin is the only breath of fresh air on the Republican side. Wrinkled old white men don’t do the trick these days. Sarah might. However, I suspect that powerful interests will be aligned against her.
No one cares what “party strategists” think.
How many books have they ever sold between them? And how many states have they ever governed?
” The very notion of a Palin candidacy has been derided in recent days by some of the brightest minds in the Republican party”
Chortle!
Operative word should be they think they are the ‘brightest minds” in their minds. No one else thinks they are.
After all, these are the same people that run the most stupid campaign this country has ever seen, when they run Juan McInsane’s campaign last year. It's a bit rich for the most incompetent men, and the biggest electoral failures in the Republican Party to come around and offer any kinds of “informed opinion” as to what the Republican Party should do.
Who wants to go for his surgery at a doctor who just butchered his last patient due to his incompetence and stupidity?
Don’t hold back, tell us how you really feel.
;-)
Thank God she wasn’t the nominee last time. We might have lost. LOL
LOL yep for sure. Notice how all of these ingrates that go after Sarah are all people who worked under McCain. No wonder Sarah went rogue. Look at all the idiots she was surrounded with during that campaign. A bunch of morons who were so terrified of Obama and the media they laid down and raised the white flag. Sarah refused to do so that is why they are pissed at her
Sarah Palin did more to raise opposition to Obama’s healthcare plan using a Facebook page than any of our “Republican” Senators have managed to achieve while they were serving in Congress.
The lady is going places!
Mclame left her for the wolves to finnish off about the 150 grand for clothes thing too. McLame sucks.
Let's just pray they do that.
Would be fun to watch them drink themselves into a comatose stupor when President Palin is sworn it.
Okay, it appears that most of the key Republicans it torments are campaign consultants who realize they now have a better chance of sprouting wings and flying than of working with her ever again and are now engaging in sour grapes.
And McCain's loss was not catastrophic?! Idiots.
I am so tired of having to vote for a Yale or Harvard graduate with a law degree in his or her hand. I want our country to be “governed” by someone who is holding our Constitution in their hand.
I’m still not settled on Palin, the elections are a long way off but I’m also not stupid and am sick of the way she’s been treated by these inside the beltway leeches.
They talk about experience as if it were a good thing that they have experience in screwing America over.
I did and found out that McCain and his cronies as well as a college professor don't think she could be a successful candidate. I really respect their opinion...NOT. Go Sarah!
Schmidt is cattily jealous of her pull with the average American.
Jealousy burns in their hearts.
And what he is is a creature of Washington.
And what the fundamental political battle is all about is Washington vs The Rest Of Us.
No "creature of Washington" can be expected to understand, much less appreciate, the deep, intense and genuine ire and disgust that exists outside the Beltway and the Boston-Washington corridor. And, if they can't understand the Republican base, how can they expect to mount a victorious Republican campaign?
Republican "strategists" are part of the Republican "problem".

Now, I don’t care who you are. Folks, that’s funny.
