McCain tries to kill additional C-17 cargo jets

WASHINGTON (AP) - While ceding some ground to President Obama on high-profile weapons cuts, lawmakers are cutting money for training and spare parts to pay for other weapons Obama doesn't want and their own pet projects.

The push-and-pull is playing out within a massive, $626 billion funding bill for the Pentagon that is being debated on the Senate floor. All told, the bill denies Obama about $4 billion he sought for operations and maintenance accounts while providing $2.5 billion for C-17 cargo jets and $2.7 billion worth of pet projects sought by lawmakers.

How in the H E double toothpicks can we deploy and maintain any kind of force projection world wide without the C-17? Is he that daft?

On Tuesday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., launched a withering but probably futile assault on the decision by the Senate Appropriations Committee, led by Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, to add 10 unrequested C-17s to the U.S. fleet of the planes, raising its size to 223. McCain and the Pentagon say the Air Force already has plenty.

Short answer: YES! Longer answer: YES! McNuts is! Truly a loser. Why can't he just go away?

Ah! But, the fleet is as old as McNuts.

I live in Arizona and I’ve not heard of any republican that’s going to oppose him.
That’s why he won’t go away. Too bad. I respect his service to the country, but he’s a disgrace as a politician.

"What we would do in this bill is effectively fund the purchase of new aircraft that we neither need nor can afford with critical sustainment money," he said. "That would have a significant impact on our ability to provide the day-to-day operational funding that our servicemen and women and their families deserve."

The article mentions Kit Bonds (R - Gooberville) but I know that McCain is being pressed hard by Retired Air Force guys out of Prescott and also getting a lot of feedback from Luke. They are more concerned about maintaining the Force as a functional unit than new hardware or toys.

McGoo has finally done it this time.

The C-17 is the finest military cargo aircraft in the entire history of aviation.

I deployed to Central Asia on one of four C-17s which carried our unit, along with some very heavy vehicles. That aircraft was so awesome we screamed bloody murder when we learned we were headed back to the world via World Airways, because the C-17s were committed to the spring offensive in Afghanistan.

Sorry, Senator, you have screwed the you-know-what this time. Do us a favor and do an Arlen Specter.

Goodbye!!

We need about 60+ additional C-17s. This is national defense - which is why Obama cuts it.

And McCain is not loved by the military. He’ll vote money for Ted Kennedy’s memorial before he funds weapons for the troops!

He was on O'Reilly last night saying we need to do a surge in Affy, just like Iraq. But, from the looks of things coming from McNuts, he'd like to send the troops but the hell with weapons, aircraft, etc.

I have a theory about McNuts and his almost anti-military stance he's been taking lately. He is bitter that his "I'm a POW" mantra in his ill-fated Presidential bid didn't work and now he's out to show everybody he could have been just as bad as Obama!

>>>to add 10 unrequested C-17s to the U.S. fleet of the planes

As a general proposition I’d say you can’t have too much Airlift capacity but if the Air Force didn’t request them, I don’t think there is a legitimate basis to go off on McCain for supporting the Pentagon’s reasoning. More FR complaints are that senators DON’T back the Pentagon.

Actually the Air force doesn't need but a few to ship their spare parts. It's the guys that are the tip of the spear that need the trash haulers.

Why don't we find out what their needs are, current and projected.

Long past time to transfer CAS and the haulers to the Army and Marines who need them, Key West Agreement be damned.

And don't forget which service tried to kill the A-10 Warthogs.

Hold on, now. If McCain’s objection is that the 2.5B for the jets came out of the operations budget along with the 2.7B for other pet projects, I’m with him on that. Buy more aircraft? Absolutely! But not if we’re disbanding divisions and wings to do it.

Yep, I think our FRiends are jumping to the wrong conclusion. The Senate is chopping $4B from Obama's request and Lord knows how much Obama chopped from what was needed in the first place. More planes but no fuel to fly 'em, no maintenance budget to maintain 'em, and not enough troops to be carried by 'em.

Air Mobility Command is the Air Force red-haired stepchild. It moves stuff for the Army, money spent on it is less money for fast jets.

Despite the need to move men and material by air into theaters like Afghanistan, the Obama Administration sought to end production of our C-17s, the work horse of our ability to project long range power. - Sarah Palin, Hong Kong.

Oh noes, Sarah Palin goes rogue. Can't McCain's guys control her?

Sheesh, did you even read what you posted? THE PENTAGON and the AIRFORCE said they didn't need any.

All you see is John McCain and you start the bashing. John McCain is the one person in the Senate that works for our military, always has and will.

Unlike your hero Zero, who doesn't give a dam about our troops, their families or the sacrifices they have and continue to pay for the freedom you have to bash whomever you please.

Has your president ever, EVER thanked our troops for serving this country? Has he ever done one thing for this country?

John McCain served his country and knows what our military needs.

Get over your selves.
