Obama W.H. collects web users' data (Big 'brother')

The White House is collecting and storing comments and videos placed on its social-networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube without notifying or asking the consent of the site users, a failure that appears to run counter to President Obama's promise of a transparent government and his pledge to protect privacy on the Internet.
Defenders of the White House actions said the Presidential Records Act requires that the administration gather the information and that it was justified in taking the additional step of asking a private contractor to "crawl and archive" all such material. Nicholas Shapiro, a White House spokesman, declined to say when the practice began or how much the new contract would cost.
In a June 5, 2008, article in PC Magazine, Mr. Obama said, "The open information platforms of the 21st century can also tempt institutions to violate the privacy of citizens. We need sensible safeguards that protect privacy in this dynamic new world."

Are they taking info from people who specifically chose to allow only friends or family to see their postings? Or are they taking info from people who allow the public to see their postings?
Because if they are taking info from people who have blocked the public from seeing their postings, what’s the next step? Reading their e-mail?

That's what I would assume, if they are bothering to poke around. The "harvesting" and keeping may be as narrow as keeping what is deposited on WH-sponsored MySpace, Twit-pages, etc. That stuff (material sent to the WH) is supposed to be archived, according to law.
-- Because if they are taking info from people who have blocked the public from seeing their postings, whatâs the next step? --
If they are poking into areas that a person is trying to limit access to, then I would find an invasion of privacy.

This is a clear privacy invasion. I cannot see the administration justifying this in Federal court. I think give it a try in federal court. I think that we will win.

Id like to see the file the W. H. has on the Free Republic; Im sure were all in The Ones crosshairs. That's probably true, but what are you gonna do? I'm not going to shut up, and neither are 150,000,000 other Americans.
They're going to have to spend time and effort (and leave electronic trails) to finger us all. I'm not going to make it easy for them by connecting directly with their websites.

you dont think they are here? theyre EVERYWHERE. Sure they are. As is any government on the face of the earth. All governments conduct surveillance and gather intel, both foreign and domestically.
So what? That's not going to change the tone of what we say here, or how we say it. As a matter of fact, the more, the better. Let 'em understand that this isn't just a few political opponents whispering in a corner.
No, we got 2 million pissed off patriots to DC on 9/12. Opposition to the Zero regime is deep, and it's widespread. Let 'em skulk around, reading our comments. Just as with the 9/12 march on DC, there are probably 100 pissed off Americans not posting on FR, for every one that is.
They have the power to shut everyone of us down.
And you don't think the American people have the power to do the same and more, to them?

How does the Presidential records act apply to information posted by private citizens on web sites that are not part of the federal government? You must be a racist to ask such a straightforward question! (After all, everyone else knows that the law doesn't apply to this administration, so to even ask that question shows that you are not part of The Collective!)
