SAN FRANCISCO -- A Northern California family whose daughter underwent forced circumcision in Indonesia is entitled to seek political asylum in the United States, a federal appeals court said Monday.
The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco criticized immigration officials who, in ordering the family deported, decided that the girl had suffered no serious harm when her genitals were mutilated as a newborn.

Thanks- useful perspective.
No Problem
The Ninth Circus? Really?
Now where are all the NOW ladies descending upon this judge insisting that she cannot possibly be a woman?
So the parents that did this heinous thing were eligible for immigration to our country?!
Here is an interview Judge McKeown gave for the “Third Branch”, a newsletter for Federal Courts, in July of 2009:

You aid in the mutilation of your child and then claim that you should be rewarded with citizenship. Because your child has been mutilated. Damn!!!
Just Damn!!!
This is the Trojan Horse; the logical extension of this ruling is that (enter group of choice: homosexuals, atheists, divorcees) outside of Europe and the Americas are also subject to persecution, and must be allowed entry on humanitarian grounds. If this spreads, we’ll make Holland look like the center of right-wing extremism. Regardless of what excuse is used in any of these cases, it will certainly do much to generate a left-wing population that our own refuses to breed itself.
Meanwhile the government is talking about forced male genital mutilation in the US?? Where do I go for asylum?
We just might find ourselves in Kenya.
It wasn't the parents who called for it. It was one of the grandmothers.
Also, the issue isn’t about the girl that underwent it — it’s about the girl who is being threatened with it. It’s a classic asylum issue.
I can’t see it in this case, but I could see it in general. For example, if a girl in Ethiopia shows up at a US consulate asking for asylum because they’re going to mutilate her tomorrow.
I get so pi$$ed when mutilation is called circumcision..A circ. removes foreskin, not the total penis...Mutilation cuts out all clitoris...Not the same by a long shot...but it does sound politically correct and these sadists don’t sound so bad..
I find it hard to believe that in a Muslim country the grandmother, a woman, could order a procedure that the father, a man, did not want.
A distinction without a difference. They did nothing to stop it and therefore condone it. Now they are abusing their daughter once again, putting her on public display for their own purposes.
The law was to grant asylum to prevent this not to let everyone that had been mutilated move to the united states and bring their entire families with them.
It should never have been passed, instead we should spend the money and time hunting down and putting people that practice this out of their misery.
But the parents went along with it, at least one of them had to.
