McCain campaign vetted Birther rumors [dismissed them, concluding Obama natural-born U.S. citizen]
Salon ^ | 2009-07-24

Posted on 07/24/2009 5:54:17 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

There are, of course, a whole lot of truly baffling things about the Birther movement and its theories. But perhaps one of the most puzzling is this unanswered question: If President Obama really were born in Kenya, why didn't the McCain or Clinton campaigns dig up the evidence and publicize it? Why has that task fallen to the ragtag crew that is the Birthers, led now by Orly Taitz, a dentist/lawyer/real estate agent who got her law degree online and is regularly admonished for having little, if any, idea how to properly file her court papers?

Turns out there's an answer.

The Washington Independent's David Weigel, one of the best sources of reportage on the movement, had a scoop on Friday: The McCain campaign did hear of the rumors of Obama's birth, and -- though they were skeptical from the start -- checked them out.

"We never saw any evidence that then-Senator Obama had been born outside of the United States," Trevor Potter, who served as the general counsel for the McCain campaign, told Weigel. "We saw rumors, but nothing that could be sourced to evidence. There were no statements and no documents that suggested he was born somewhere else. On the other side, there was proof that he was born in Hawaii."

Weigel also quotes an unnamed lawyer who was working for the McCain campaign and was asked to look into the legal merits of one of the early Birther lawsuits. "The conversation was along the lines of ‘this is idiotic, but explain to me why,’” that lawyer said. “I looked at whether the lawsuit was going to be dismissed. I said yes.”

What a load of bogus crap. If 0 gets a bunch of media outlets to call it off, don’t you think McLame would do the same to “help his good friend”?

Why did McLame show his birth cert but accept that 0bama didn’t have to show his?

Thanks Trevor, you did a swell job on the campaign. Thanks again.

No matter what the uncertainties are in the concerns over the validity of Obama’s natural citizenship, it is undeniable that the quickest way to resolve the questions would be to waive the restrictions on access to the original document in the possession of the State of Hawaii and let a panel of forensic document examiners and journalists from a wide array of media entities have a look and put an end to all the speculation.

I don’t see why it serves Obama to ignore this. He has a lot on his plate, seems rather challenged at this moment - why not put this behind him?

Maybe he thought that his buddies in the sycophantic media would saddle up on the issue, like they did with McCain, and compel Obama to produce his birth certificate too. Surprise John!

Why would the McCain campaign waste money on this? There’s no legal standard of proof for the “natural born citizen” test. And if there was any evidence to be found that would have cast serious, legally actionable doubt on Obama’s eligibility, Hillary would have dug it up even if she’d had to have people killed to get at the info.

You raise an interesting point. He sure didn't act as if he really wanted the job. That or it was more important to him to be seen as the "good guy" than to win.

Either way, he was always going to lose. Palin just made it interesting.

Think about it. With Hillary in the Senate, she didn’t have to take orders from President Obama, and he couldn’t fire her — she could cause all the trouble she wanted to for him. Putting her in the Secretary of State slot made him her boss, and her continued employment in a significant national office contingent on pleasing him. It was one of his more astute political moves. And accepting the offer was one of her least astute political moves.

If they had found a smoking gun, would they have used it? I have doubts.

Salon takes the stand that if McCain vetted the birth and didn't call it, it means Obama is a citizen. I think it means that just as Jimmie Carter never met a dictator he didn't love; McCain never met a Democrat he couldn't love. I just do not believe he would have run with it.

Really. We are supposed to all scurry back under our rocks like cockroaches because McLame's lawyers have pronounced from Mt Olympus that "they couldn't find any evidence" that Zero was foreign born. Apparrently foreign born isn't the only problem, his father was a British subject and that determines his nationality under US law extant at the time. He could have been born on the damn moon and he can't get around that one. It seems he used this twist in the laws to get passports to visit Pakistan and attend college as a "foreign student" as well so even he acknowledged when it served his purposes that he was not a "Natural U.S. citizen" but now he is president that is an embarrassment.

When "his own kind" are threatened by his existence he will be given the "lead or silver" talk and that will be the end of him. Cetainly the upcoming legislation under the new Rep Congress in 2010 will require him to come up with more than he has prviously to prove his legitimacy if he plans to run again. That is if the Rep Party isn't terminally infested with RHINOs. Interesting times, fer sure.

Looks like Obama's press corps don't have much of a job to do when they rely on good ol' McCain and Hillary for "vetting" Obama on the birth certificate issue.  Any way you cut it, it's the media's job to do the legwork and vetting, and to ask the right, tough questions.  Instead, they consistently cover his butt by writing rosy scenarios about his plans and policies, all the while avoiding asking the hard questions.

However, another unanswered question is why doesn't Obama simply end any lingering doubt, baseless or not, and simply produce a valid birth certificate?

TOO LATE NOW! There are now some constitutional/legislative “theologians” who say that even IF the DemocRAT votes COULD be found to impeach him, that Obama is legally UNIMPEACHABLE, if in fact he is not a natural-born American. They say that, because then he would never have been eligible to hold the office in the first place, and so is NOT the President, and thus CANNOT be impeached! The articles simply would NOT APPLY to him, any more than they would to you or me. Meanwhile, he occupies the White House, sitting around smoking cigars, drinking Crown Royal, and flitting about on Air Force One. If true, HOW would he be removed from the White House? Perhaps via an ordinary EVICTION process? Don’t let the media bury this story!

I have written nothing to denigrate the service of John McCain.

McCain is in his second career and it is this position as a Senator and candidate for POTUS for which he has come up short in the past year.

McCain asked millions of us to vote for him and we did. He let us down by not following through then, and now back in the Senate is not standing up against the policies of Hussein and the Dems. He didn't even stand up for his running mate Palin while she was being trashed then and now.
