Don't Wince. Fight! Dick Cheney, Most Valuable Republican.
Weekly Standard ^ | May 15, 2009 | William Kristol

Posted on 05/15/2009 1:45:53 PM PDT by Mozilla

Dick Cheney is reminding Republicans that they need to defend themselves when attacked.

When President Obama released the Justice Department interrogation memos a month ago, Cheney denounced him for doing so. He explained why it was inappropriate and unwise to release such documents. But he did more. He didn't just defend himself and the administration in which he served. He fought back, and encouraged others to do so.

So while some Hill Republicans were fretting about getting a positive message out and others were launching substance-free listening tours, while GOP operatives were wringing their hands about whether Republicans could recover from the Bush years, and while most senior Bush alumni were in hiding, Dick Cheney--Darth Vader himself, Mr. Unpopularity, the last guy you'd supposedly want out there making the case--stepped onto the field. He's made himself the Most Valuable Republican of the first four months of the Obama administration.

Of course, this has resulted in some Republican political operatives' doing what they do best: complaining, on background, to the media. "As Cheney Seizes Spotlight, Many Republicans Wince," was the front-page headline in Thursday's Washington Post.

It's good to have Cheney defending the what he feels is the right things he and the George W. Bush administration did right to defend the nation after 9/11. Of course it angers those who want the party to move away from the Bush administration.

My only question would be where were these brass balls when the GOP party let the Democrats walk all over them for 8 years?

Its about time someone spoke up.

They have been running roughshod over the cowardly republicans for years now.

We dont need more Moderates, we need more Conservatives with a set of Gnads.

The Courage of Dick Cheney serves only to underscore the capon-ness of Bush II, Boehmer, McConnell, et al and frame the treachery of Spector, Snow, McCain, Crist, and Collins in the proper light.

The “leaders” criticizing Cheney are damnfools. Already the national security poll numbers are running strongly back in our favor. So much for Cheney “hurting” the party.

>brass balls

In a lockbox?

But, don’t think the Dems really began to gain traction till after 2005, the tipping point being the response to Katrina.

Til that time, Bush pretty much had them beaten down.

For some reason Republicans feel they need to emasculate themselves when the liberal fascists attack them. It’s one of the reasons I could never respect the GOP. Cheney is a refreshing and unique exception.

And my question is how we as conservatives allowed the left to box Dick Cheney into the role of Darth Vader? Name me one thing he has done deserving of this?

We, as conservatives, should have been, and should now, be out there defending Dick Cheney. For I agree, he is one of the ver few remaining conservatives who remain true to the principals Ronald Reagan showed us.

They did the right thing. On this issue I stand with them and up for their actions a 100%. It is issues such as overspending and tarp that I never agreed with the Bush administration on. To throw the dishes out with the bath water is stupid and lacks principle IMO. We as conservatives need to be clear on all our principles and be able to argue for them clearly. Lazy dismissals and just wholly dismissing Bush altogether is for the RINOS that want to appease liberals.
