Shortages stir coffee and sugar prices
Financial Times ^ | Sunday May 10, 2009 | By Javier Blas and Jenny Wiggins in London

Posted on 05/10/2009 8:00:29 PM PDT by muawiyah

Caffeine addicts face higher prices for their daily fix as the wholesale cost of both coffee and sugar rise sharply because of poor crops and robust demand.

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society; Foreign Affairs; News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: agriculture; coffee; columbia; cool; demand; drought; sugar
This is another example of how global cooling affects agriculture. Here both sugar and coffee, typical tropical/subtropical crops, are being hurt (or even destroyed) by heavy rains.

Best to stock up while you can afford to.

I’m going to do a Sam’s Club run tomorrow.
I can’t live without coffee.

And on the same note, I had to bring all my plants in tonight because of a May freeze.

thanks Al Gore.

It’s still a smart move. HFCS is increasingly unpopular, and it tastes awful.

Wine’s going up, too, because the vineyards can’t get enough water which is now protected. I’ll be stocking up on coffee in the next few days; thanks for the heads up!

My dining room table looks like a greenhouse. Thank goodness my boys, hubby and son, helped me bring it all inside. I’m coming down with the flu pretty bad. My son, Jack, came down with it on Thursday night. Dr. Mom always gets it next, despite my best intentions and hygiene. It stinks.

Pick up some coffee for me, would’ja? LOL

Been stocking up on both for months when they have $6.00 per lb., and no more for the coffee. Sugar is not as important here but do buy Splenda or equiv., every so often, under 6.00.

I meant 6.00 for 32 oz canned coffee not 1 lb.

“It’s still a smart move. HFCS is increasingly unpopular, and it tastes awful.”

Does anybody know how long the beverage companies have been using HFCS?

I’m wondering if this stuff is more prone to give you a stomach ache vs. sugar sweetening.

Hubby wants algore to pay for his strained back!

I found this:
http://www.gadgetgrid.com/2007/04/26/pot-mover-caddy/

It won’t help the next couple of days, and we’ll have to put some plywood over the steps for a ramp, but it will be welcome in the Fall.

I have a huge Calamondin orange that is 40 years old, a Ficus that is 8 feet tall, a manageable Hibiscus and a huge Shefflera that had to come in. I managed the smaller ones, including a Patio Hybrid tomato that is already fruiting, myself.

I think the large ones will just stay in until Tuesday, as we have the same temperature forecast Monday night.

And on the same note, I had to bring all my plants in tonight because of a May freeze.

We've had sub freezing temperatures the last two nights in the Pocatello area. After a beautiful afternoon with blue skies, a high, thin cloud layer moved in. That will keep temps above freezing tonight. We had 7 inches of snow on June 6, 2008. Spring can be very fickle here.

I'll probably stock up on my coffee, tea and sugar supplies too. My coffee maker uses the single use "pillows". It's quick and clean. Grinding beans for espresso makes a single cup of coffee into a 20 minute effort when the equipment clean up is factored in. Losing 20 minutes of billable labor at $180 vs 5 minutes at Starbucks makes the latter a no brainer. The "pillow" style takes one minute and you're finished.

More importantly, gas is going up again.

The motorcycles I purchased last year get much better mileage than my Mariner Hybrid. The weather is nice, so the bikes are getting lots of use. The big Star Roadliner manages 46 MPG on a long run at 55 MPH. The smallest bikes, Yamaha TW200 and XT250 get better than 70 MPG under the same conditions. My wife's Piaggio BV500 and my Suzuki DR650SE fall in the middle around 55 MPG.

Lately, we make our small grocery runs with the Roadliner. The hard saddlebags can easily handle 6 half gallons of milk with room to spare of other stuff.

HFCS has been used in soft drinks since about 1975. I preferred the taste of sugar (sucrose) sweetened Coke in the pre-1975 time frame.

There's this animal like a cat. It hunts for coffee beans. It eats them. They come out the other end and they're worth thousands of dollars.

Get one of those cats. Trade the processed beans for instant. You should have no shortage of coffee.

I’ve been stocking up on sugar every month. Our local discount warehouse sells ten pound bags for $3.58. Got my hands on some food grade storage buckets and have several pounds worth. Maybe I should get some more this month.

Slightly off topic - do you take vitamin D supplements? I have been reading all I can about the effects of vitamin D and how effective it is in warding off colds and the flu.

I can send you a link to an interesting story written by a doctor doing such research. As luck would have it, a fellow FReeper sent me the original link! The doc is convinced 2000 MG a day does the trick when we don't get enough sunlight.

LOL, it’s fine - studies show excessive coffee drinking staves off diabetes. Hey, maybe I’ll get a tax break under Obamacare for using coffee as preventive medicine!

I hope you feel better soon.

May freeze in Michigan? NOt too unusual now is it?

3 years ago I had the family on top of Pikes Peak on July 2. had 18 inches of snow in 2 hours.
Hope the freeze didn’t stunt everything in bloom.

Actually, I’ve lived here for 12 years and never saw a May freeze. Last year, we had the pool out at this time!

And I wouldn’t mind at all if this wasn’t our first year ever to grow food and we weren’t constantly told we’re warming.

(I got everything in so they should make it)

Thank you for your kind thoughts. I’m having a cup of joe right now then it’s back to bed. I saw my husband off to work and checked the boy, still sick with a sore throat and body aches. His school’s homepage is now dominated with a warning to keep kids home if they have any symptoms at all so I know this is spreading like wildfire. I pooh-pooed the media hype about the flu. Now it’s not so funny. That and the fact that it’s 33 degrees outside. Thank you for allowing me to whine and moan. LOL

My girls were moaning this weekend that they wanted the pool out. I could see a nice rim of ice around that inflatable ring!

I’m so ready for summer.

Our flu has totally died down. All the schools are open again. My homeschooled girls asked if they could have time off for the flu. I said, if you get it.

They were hoping! Foolish children.....
