(CNN) -- Connie and Donald McCracken were watching CNN one evening last week when they learned of the tragic death of actress Natasha Richardson from a head injury. Immediately, their minds turned to their 7-year-old daughter, Morgan, who was upstairs getting ready for bed.
An injured Morgan McCracken has benefited from awareness after Natasha Richardson's death.
1 of 2 Two days earlier, Morgan, her father, and brother had been playing baseball in the yard of their Mentor, Ohio, home when her father hit a line drive that landed just above Morgan's left temple. A lump formed, but the McCrackens iced

An adult shouldn’t be hitting line drives at seven year olds, for starters.
Agreed, bunting or hand throwing softballs only with kid in helmet.
What a pathetic and stupid father! He hit a baseball as hard as he could that was pitched by a 7 year old girl. Why isn’t there an arrest warrant out on this droll for child endangerment?
Thank G-d for this news.
Natasha died tragically, but not in vain after this.
Her story may save many lives, now.
I must have the hardest head alive. I have hit or been hit more times than one can count.
My middle son is the same. We were always told if it bumps out, you’re safe. Guess that’s not always the case.
We used to have rock fights in our neighborhood. It was all good fun until one day when I whipped one at a kid and scored a direct hit on his noggin. Blood and some very angry parents put a stop to that for good.
There was a small apple orchard next to our house and we used to have apple fights, too. The apples hurt, but not as much as the rocks did ;)
To be fair, how common is this from seemingly innocuous head bumps. To be a normal active kid is to bump your head several times while growing up.
I have been hit with rocks and a baseball straight ot the center of my forehead and other numerous times to tell.
I guess so. Just wondering how hard my head really is? :)
And my arms were constant lumps and bruises due to what we used to call froggin. My brother thought I would be the perfect target to practice on. LOL
Those rocks can sting. They hurt bad.
Same here. I was clobbered by a mis-directed lacrosse ball - those things are hard - during practice and I wasn’t wearing a helmet! I was out for about five minutes. When thrown from a lacrosse stick, those balls can travel about 90 MPH.
You are inferring something that is not in the article. The author says line drive, not the parents. And the article never says (that I could find) “hit a baseball as hard as he could”. Sometimes a baseball hits the sweet spot of a bat just right and comes off a ‘bunt’ pretty fast. I’ve seen “bunts” go to the second basemen as a pop fly.
Let’s not decide the attributes of the father just yet.
Secondly, I find it hard to believe the girl was “OK” for two days with an epidural hematoma. That is bleeding outside the dura mater (tough mother) covering on the brain. The accumulating blood puts pressure on the brain and then the patient presents with the symptoms written about in the article. Generally symptoms present much sooner. The good news is that the parents DID take her to the ED when she displayed symptoms of brain trauma, and she was spared. Perhaps the initial injury ruptured later. Dunno.
I had a garage door panel fall on my head and a wrench fell off a ladder onto my head, so I guess mine is pretty hard too. But then I’ve been called “hard-headed” all my life!
Getting nailed by a large apple launched from across the neighbor’s yard is no day at the beach, either.
Some procedure was done but I don't know what.
She is in one of the best places she could be to get proper treatment...and was flown there in a jet.
I bet that hurt. Yeah, me too. It’s probably because we’ve had the you know hit out of us.
Ouch.
