Top U.N. Official Accuses U.S. of Inhuman 'Atrocities' in Iraq, Afghanistan

A top U.N. official accused the United States of committing inhuman "atrocities" in Iraq and Afghanistan during a speech Wednesday to the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva. "The aggressions against Iraq and Afghanistan and their occupations constitute atrocities that must be condemned and repudiated by all who believe in the rule of law in international relations," said U.N. General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann. • Click here to see the speech. D'Escoto claimed that U.S. actions have directly led to more than a million Iraqi civilian deaths since 2003, a vastly inflated figure that does not correspond with the U.N.'s own estimates.

The U.N.'s health and medical agency, the World Health Organization, says 151,000 Iraqis have died since the 2003 invasion. IraqBodyCount.org puts the death toll between 90,000- 99,245.

D'Escoto's fiery speech came on the day the Obama administration decided to take up observer status on the Human Rights Council, which the Bush administration had boycotted because it was unable to crack down on despots and human rights abuses.

D'Escoto urged the Council to put the human rights situation in Iraq on its agenda, accusing the U.S. of war crimes and a series of human rights violations. "These must be addressed to bring an end to the scandalous present impunity," he said.

He also called on the U.S. to free five Cuban nationals being held in U.S. prisons. The group was convicted in a Miami court in 2001 on a range of charges including lying about their identities, trying to obtain U.S. military secrets and spying on Cuban exile groups. D'Escoto, once the foreign minister for the Communist Sandinista government of Nicaragua, called the five "heroes" being held in "preposterous conditions." D'Escoto said he was hopeful that the Obama administration would address his concerns

The global media/left seems to be having some kind of contest to see which Goebbels style liar can come up with the most wildly inflated numbers for Iraqi dead. This stinking commie piece of excrement is behind the curve though, since lefty radio host Jay Diamond has already put the number at 2 million. I confidently expect that by the end of 2012 the left will assert that everyone in Iraq has been killed twice over.

Note also that this terrorist swine condemns our operations in Afghanistan but says nothing about 9-11 or bin Laden's numerous other atrocities, nor does he suggest a rational alternative to military action.

The UN is worse than useless, it is the enemy. We should no more be funding and hosting these degenerates, liars, and terrorists than FDR should have funded Hitler or provided studio space for Goebbels.

I hope I’m alive to see the day when we show our enemies what war atrocities are really all about. We’ve been way too nice with these folks IMHO.

Jealous of the earmark feeding frenzy occurring in our Congress, this little third-world liar whores himself out for more funding from our newly elected beloved leader who’s an easy mark for any leftist cause at all. Smart move. His only mistake was failing to accuse the US of increasing global warming in Iraq. That’d be a twofer.

Sounds about right. The Wikipedia entry for this guy notes he was a Nicaraguan, born in Los Angeles in 1933, is an ordained Catholic priest and a practitioner of “liberation theology”. He is a staunch supporter of Daniel Ortego and secretly became a Sandinista. He was the Central and South American nations’ candidate for his current office in the U.N. His stated goal is to get rid of the veto power of the members of the Security Council and make the United Nations more “democratic”. Wonder if Obama has the guts to stand up to him.

I bet Obama rushes to address these concerns instantly.

He has always been running for his next job while doing diddly at the job he's already got. He's eying Supreme High Emperor of Earth in the one-world, all-controlling government he wants the UN to morph into.

How much longer will we continue to swill these swine on taxpayer dollars so they can insult and threaten us and undermine our rights?

Its PAST time to cut off ALL funding to this class of international parasites, gangsters and thugs, evict them from our shores and withdraw from this organization.

The only reason this is tolerated is because the globalists in both political parties see potential business profits there for themselves by currying favor with degenerate western European democracies and third world dictators.

The same lefty scum was saying that the pre-war embargo was causing 50,000 deaths per year. Using their own math the war and the aftermath has save ~200,000 lives.

“D’Escoto was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Maryknoll congregation, before engaging in politics. He was a key figure in the founding of the Maryknoll imprint, Orbis Books, in 1970, and was an official with the World Council of Churches. As an adherent of liberation theology, he secretly joined the Sandinistas.

He first publicly expressed support for the FSLN as one of Los Doce, in October 1977, and was appointed foreign minister after the Sandinista triumph in 1979. He served as foreign minister in Daniel Ortega’s FSLN government from 1979 to 1990.[5] Pope John Paul II admonished him and other priests in the government for getting involved in politics. Early in the Contra war, the Reagan administration perceived him as a relative moderate who might break with the regime. While foreign minister, he received the Lenin Peace Prize for 1985-6, and the Thomas Merton Award for 1987.[6]

After the Sandinistas lost the 1990 elections, he led the Communal Movement, but resigned that post in December 1991 after his support within the organization waned.[7] He has staunchly supported Ortega against the Sandinista Renovation Movement dissidents.[8]

Latin American and Caribbean nations selected Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann as their candidate to become the next president of the U.N. General Assembly. On June 4, 2008, he was elected by acclamation to preside over 63rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, from September 2008 to September 2009.[9]” Wiki
