California's 'Green Jobs' Experiment Isn't Going Well

By STEPHEN MOORE

Los Angeles

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was all smiles in 2006 when he signed into law the toughest anti-global-warming regulations of any state.

Mr. Schwarzenegger and his green supporters boasted that the regulations would steer California into a prosperous era of green jobs, renewable energy, and technological leadership. Instead, since 2007 -- in anticipation of the new mandates --

California has led the nation in job losses.

The regulations created a cap-and-trade system, similar to proposed federal global-warming measures, by limiting the CO2 that utilities, trucking companies and other businesses can emit, and imposed steep new taxes on companies that exceed the caps.

Since energy is an input in everything that's produced, this will raise the cost of production inside California's borders.

Now, as the Golden State prepares to implement this regulatory scheme, employers are howling. It's become clear to nearly everyone that the plan's backers have underestimated its negative impact and exaggerated the benefits. "We've been sold a false bill of goods," is how Republican Assemblyman Roger Niello, who has been the GOP's point man on environmental issues in the legislature, put it to me.

Part of the plan is working just fine. Pretty soon there won’t be as many businesses to produce greenhouse gasses.

I think you'll find, even with relaxed standards, nuclear power still isn't competitive in a free market.

We are fortunate here in MN to have two nuclear power plants that have help keep our electric rates low for many years.

It's not really a stupid party, it just has a few badly mistaken and un-grounded lunk-heads here and there that just refuse to recognize that it needs to be the party of commonsense with high moral standards so people can be proud of their country and party, once more!!!

You know what I mean, don't you???

Believe it or not, that's the goal of many environmentalists. That's why it doesn't scare them when you tell them that's what will happen.

"I think you'll find, even with relaxed standards, nuclear power still isn't competitive in a free market."

I wish I could understand your strange, inexplicable negativity toward both hydro and nuclear. One is constant and the other is the top peak producer and the two compliment each other so well.

If what you're saying were correct, why on earth would the industrial Japanese and even the screwball French be using nuclear almost exclusively???

“...Completely eliminate the California Air Resources Board.”

Agreed, but my reasoning besides them being “Useless” as you say, is that they, as well as any of the other alleged Environmentalist agencies be they State, or Federal have no oversight whatsoever. I’ve posted this before.

These sorts have the ability to create their own issues, provide back up their agenda(s) as necessary (should anyone have the audacity to question their authority) with their own pseudo-science, confront, and destroy skeptics of reasoned science with support of the Political and Judicial sycophants embedded in the Leftisphere that promote and support their tyranny for the purpose of controlling evil capitalism, thus our very lives, our State, and our Nation.

Life is good for them. They thrive within their World of Industrial/Market abuse, confiscatory fees and assessments created from whole cloth of which they also confiscate.

We often discuss the continuing saga of Piracy off Somalia, but seem to not think of analogeous acts sanctioned by Leftist dictum (actually going beyond dictum, as in law) in our own land here at home.

The truth is that either an oversight of Science and Law is necessary to rein in the overpopulation of this particular species, or they must be eliminated as you suggest, and I agree.

Mr (or Ms as the case may be) Squidly has made the point. The elite want to live in Eden — See the Green Agenda. They want to live in Eden. Industry and the working class spoil their views. The workers shall live in small eco-friendly cottages and wear sturdy shoes. The “planners” of course need something more comfortable (Mr Gore’s house for example). None of us will eat meat of course and after 80% of the population is gone we can tear down the dams and the “rivers can run free.”

I suggest that future markets in thatch and fig leaves might be strong.

They have an agenda — and we’re not on it.

California's economy is collapsing, its budget is in the red and its government makes things worse with its fanatical commitment to Green activism. The same thing will happen nationally if Obama is stupid enough to follow Red Arnold's lead.

“”Mr. Schwarzenegger fits into that camp. He recently declared: “I recommend very strongly that we move forward . . . . You will always have people saying this will lose jobs.”

And he was supposed to be the pro-business, pro-growth governator - what a disappointment!!!

“Meanwhile, the state is losing jobs, a lot of them. California’s unemployment rate hit 9.3% in December, up from 4.9% in December 2006. There are now 1.5 million Californians out of work. The state has the fourth-highest housing foreclosure rate in the nation, has lost more businesses than any state in recent years, and is facing a $40 billion deficit. With cap and trade firmly in place, the economic situation is only likely to get worse.”

California may yet be saved.... by Washington, as DUMB’O and his greenies impose the same enviromarxist policies for the whole country.
