An US dietician says that has branded Americans food habits an "SUV eating style", which contributes to global warming more than the cars they drive, in her book.
Kate Geagan, registered dietitian in Park City, Utah, refers to a University of Iowa study that has found that food on average travels about 1,500 miles to reach people's tables.
"When we choose highly processed packaged foods, we contribute to global warming, so food is a new part of the dialogue about the environment. And this is something that everyone can do now and not wait for politicians to enact changes. An added bonus is that eating green saves green and what consumer doesn't want to save money on food?" the Environmental News Newwork quoted her as saying, while explaining how changing one's diet can impact the environment.
Kate, whose book 'Go Green Get Lean: Trim Your Waistline With the Ultimate Low-Carbon Footprint Diet' will be published in March, also says that there is a difference between eating green and being a vegetarian.
"Only about 3 percent of the U.S. population identifies themselves as vegetarians, so that is not doable for most people. But what is doable is choosing local or regional foods to reduce our carbon footprint. This isn't just about eliminating meat or eating only organic foods. If your organic smoothie is shipped by air and freight halfway around the world, then it isn't healthy for the environment. Eating green strikes a balance between cost, health and the planet -- a win-win for everyone," she said.
Kate also revealed her top three tips for consumers to go green.
"Eat more plants and cut down on beef and dairy.

I guess they want us all to become vegetarians.
Locally grown food does tend to taste better, although shipping food does not cause changes in the climate.
Kate is heartily encouraged to kiss my ass.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
Most likely because it's fresher, no?
I guess they didn’t get the memo that warming is as passe’ as disco
I just got back from a trip to Vermont where restaurants tend to serve locally grown, and I can tell you there is a difference. I have also eaten out a lot in Chicago, and restaurant food is very good there, I guess b/c it’s fresh as well.
Outside of seafood, Miami restaurant food pretty much stinks.
Actually, a most of the distance is covered by train or ship, which use considerably less fuel per ton mile moved.
Also, food is imported for a reason — it can be grown better and cheaper elsewhere. You could use heated greenhouses to grow just about anything, just about anywhere — but, you'd use a lot more energy than you would shipping the stuff from places where it grows naturally.
No, they want us all to die.
The mental illness “Global Warming Syndrome” has no known cure. Well maybe glaciation, but that’s about it.
So now a “registered dietician” thinks she’s a climatologist? How cute.
Lots of stuff in the news about food- global warming, obesity, trans fat...Save us Obama! Regulate diet from Washington with reasonable common sense food regulation policies!
Man, youz crazee!
“Locally grown food does tend to taste better, although shipping food does not cause changes in the climate.”
Having grown up on a farm and having sold our food to local restaurants, I can absolutely vouch for this. You also have food that is picked when it’s ripe as opposed to being picked early and allowed to “ripen” on its trip in a truck.
That said, this woman almost wants to make me go to the grocery store and buy a bunch of processed crap.
Vegans eat a lot of fiber and consequently tend to put out more flatulence than most of the rest of us. But then, we already knew that Libs feel no need to be consistent in their beliefs.
Yeah right. And what local food will feed all of some place like NYC? This is the classic bait and switch. I shop at the local farmer’s markets 80% of the year. I would 100% but they ain’t there the other 20%. I prefer my meat to be local but hey I love Bison and California just doesn’t produce any that is good. Same for lamb. I want to see what this woman’s diest consists of, then we can get down to brass tacks
