This is how Minette Marrin, writing in the Times, describes the British abroad, and with some justification. Marrin is responding to the case of well-heeled expatriates Michelle Palmer, 36, and Vince Acors, 34, who had drunken sex on a beach in Dubai and insulted a policeman who tried to caution them. The “couple” — or rather “copulating pair,” for they had only just met — were sentenced to three months in prison for offending public decency and fined about £200 ($320). As a preventative measure, Dubai’s popular Madinat Jumeirah hotel recently issued an “etiquette guide,” warning guests to “employ discretion” in public displays of affection (“anything more than a peck on the cheek”). The guide also warns that “drunken behavior, especially outside licensed premises in the hotel, is severely punished.”...

Haven’t these people read a paper in the last 10 years. They deserve punishment for being stupid.
Since the Hollywood celebs are interested in a move to Dubai it will be interesting to see how much trouble they get in.....

One word to make this a no-no: sand.
Well, nothing excuses cutting off someone’s head because you’re an angry Muslim, true.
But there’s no question that people around the world have contempt for Brits, Euros, and Americans abroad when they behave in this kind of way.
Similarly, the way America is depicted by Hollywood has done a lot to increase contempt for America abroad.
At the very least, the moral of the story is, Don’t try smuggling drugs into places like Singapore, and don’t have sex on the beach in Dubai. It’s just plain stupid.
I think they got their names wrong. I believe the offending pair were named Sandy Bottoms and Seymour Butz.

Yep. And before anyone bashes Dubai, let's remind ourselves that having sex on a public beach, ignoring warnings to stop and then verbally abusing police officers will get you arrested pretty much anywhere in the world. If this happened in America, everyone would be praising law and order.
In the service of my country as a sailor in the U.S. Navy, I have had the pleasure to enjoy Dubai on several occasions. It is a wonderful city and I don't have a single complaint about the place. In fact, Dubai has been so far my favorite port. I look forward to returning again.
I can personally attest that one can get as drunk as they want within the confines of the numerous hotel night clubs. Furthermore, if one wishes to enjoy the company of the opposite sex, again, this is fine as long as it takes place within the privacy of the clubs or a hotel room. Dubai (like many American cities) takes public drunkenness and public sex acts seriously. This couple weren't in a club or hotel room. They were outside at the beach and not being discrete whatsoever with their activities.
Keep the drinking and PDAs in the clubs and nobody in Dubai will bother you. Take it outside in front of their children and they're going to get understandably upset. We'd react the same way.
Exactly how stupid is someone to do this in a country like that??? The amazing thing is not that anyone is that stupid, but that two people that stupid managed to find each other!
Sex on the beach must be like throwing sand in the gears and that has to be awfully painful.

Quitcher bellyaching and whingeing. Yobbos and louts are the last UK export. Those rate-payers still remaining in the UK ought to be thankful they are not at home and on the dole, or worse, traveling Europe on the dole, like their soccer-fan siblings. Rough crowd. And the guys are even worse.

I love the beaches, coral reefs and limestone karsts of Phuket, Krabi and Pang Nga. However the 50% of all tourists that meet the above description (include Germans, Dutch, Canadians, Japanese, Koreans, Australian and Americans to the list) make it hard to enjoy the more populated tourist spots. Just as bad are the Thai pimps, prostitutes, and schemers that service the jerks among the tourists. Common decency would solve the problems but unfortunately, today it has become quite uncommon. Therefore, we avoid the tourist spots and miss some beautiful locations and beaches.
If they don’t want drunk Brits screwing in public, how about not granting them visas?
They still sound like morons.
