Students Suspended For Obama Comments

Officials at Papillion–La Vista South High School have suspended two students who allegedly used insensitive language during a social studies class discussion about the presidential election.

The school said the juniors made comments about President-elect Barack Obama that had racial and religious undertones.

School officials declined to release the names of the two juniors and did not say how long they'll be kept out of classes. They also didn't disclose exactly what the students said, but indicated that the suspension fell under the Papio-La Vista School District's harassment policy.

"It basically says that any language that's offensive, based on gender, race, religion or ethnicity is not tolerated," said principal Enid Schonewise. "It is very bothersome when you have these kinds of activities taking place in your building."

Schonewise said the rest of the student body has been handling the aftermath of the incident in proper fashion.

"What we do in such situations as this is try to address the behavior and change it," she said. "We're a learning environment. We want every student at South to feel comfortable in their learning environment and comfortable in our building."

The incident wasn't the only one of this type to occur recently in metro schools. A Bellevue East student came to the attention of the Secret Service after allegedly making threatening remarks about Obama.

The Bellevue district did not take action in that case because the incident did not occur on school grounds and no charges were filed.

So much for the 1st Amendment...

Freedom of speech only applies when you what someone else WANTS you to say...

So they won’t say what they said exactly, only that it is bad enough to suspend them. Wonderful.

It’s beginning already.

I just wonder what the tipping point is going to be, and when the hell it is finally going to happen.

Just the beginning. Soon merely criticizing his policies will earn one a suspension. ...or far worse. Heil Hussein!

Unless they used the “N” word, I don’t know how this was truly offensive or worth a suspension.

Liberalism is mentally deranged. Negative comments against our sitting president, Bush, would not be punished.

It doesn't say what the "insensitive" language was. If it truly were bad, they would have told us. The students probably said something true, like that Obama wouldn't have won if he were white.

Hmmm, no quotations of the ‘insensitive’ language? Maybe it was just something like “What a moron, the only way the government can afford to give healthcare to everybody is to give them the power to tell you when to die.”

Sounds more like "indocrination" than "learning"... There is Obama's "change" for you...Change how you think, speak, live...Change...

>>>So much for the 1st Amendment...

The 1st amendment does not apply inside schools. There’s plenty of case law to back that up.
