Bailout with 'sweeteners' heads toward Senate win

WASHINGTON - After one spectacular failure, the $700 billion financial industry bailout found a second life Wednesday, speeding toward passage in the Senate and gaining ground in the House where conservative opposition seemed to soften.

Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners for the right and left, hoping to secure approval in the House by Friday, just days after lawmakers there stunningly rejected an earlier version and sent markets plunging around the globe.

The measure has not caused the same uproar in the Senate, where both parties' presidential candidates, Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama, were making rare appearances to vote their support. That would send the package back to the House, where passage would require a turnaround of 12 votes from Monday's 228-205 defeat.

Take note of who votes for this abomination. Then vote them out at your earliest opportunity.

Well, some Senators were heard to say this idiocy was better than the one the House rejected.

This battle will be won or lost in the House of Representatives.

Could someone here confirm what I heard on Fox that some or one of the sweeteners are only a one year deal?

I can’t believe many of the Republicans are going along with this sham of a bill! This is advocating socialism! It has to stop!

Krauthammer was on Fox, he called it the “Pork Train” and get this, there are a couple things on it that are just so NEEDED, such as the research of wool, and something about wooden arrows for children....I would love to see the details of this so called rescue. It has RAT written all over it.

There are no more than three or four real conservatives among Republicans in the Senate.

It still has to pass the House. I suggest 100% of House Republicans vote against it, forcing the RATs to have it hung around their necks.

Can you imagine the House Members against the bailout that have gone home sitting and listening to all of this?

Judd Gregg must have spoken for 24 hours in the last 3 days.
People must be turning him off!

They just talked of the 'sweeteners' on Fox News. Incredible; is all I can say. . .and am totally disgusted. If they were serious; why all the 'sweeteners'? Why did they not fix the infamous 'mark to market'/suspend Sarbanes-Oxley. . .promote SOMETHING seriously designed to grow our economy and 'free markets'. It is a travesty to hear the garbage attached. And to know what is NOT on there; that should be. Do not want to hear how 'things' will be added later. Who will add them. . .Obama?

Fools; all of them!

Right, take advantage of a national crisis to sneak some extras in...this needs to be exploited. They say that some of it is added to get the votes needed, but it is unacceptable in a time of supposed crisis.

For some communities (and legislators), pork is like heroin. There are a million bridges to nowhere and libraries named after senators and community basketball courts that you and I paid for with our hard-earned dollars, and the congress-critters can’t hand it out fast enough. And the (cough-cough) “Messiah” wants to hand out even more to every corner of the globe. Ayn Rand’s futuristic world looks more and more plausible.
