WASHINGTON -- Let's see: housing meltdown, credit crunch, oil shock not seen since the 1970s. The economy is slowing, unemployment growing and inflation increasing. It's the sixth year of a highly unpopular war and the president's approval rating is at 30 percent.
The Italian Communist Party could win this election. The American Democratic Party is trying its best to lose it.
Democrats have the advantage on just about every domestic issue from health care to education. However, Americans' greatest concern is the economy, and their greatest economic concern is energy (by a significant margin: 37 percent to 21 percent for inflation). Yet Democrats have gratuitously forfeited the issue of increased drilling for domestic oil and gas. By an overwhelming margin of 2-1, Americans want to lift the moratorium preventing drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf, thus unlocking vast energy resources shut down for the last 27 years.
Democrats have been adamantly opposed. They say that we cannot drill our way out of the oil crisis. Of course not. But it is equally obvious that we cannot solar or wind or biomass our way out. Does this mean that because any one measure cannot solve a problem, it needs to be rejected?
Barack Obama remains opposed to new offshore drilling (although he now says he would accept a highly restricted version as part of a comprehensive package). Just last week, he claimed that if only Americans would inflate their tires properly and get regular tune-ups, "we could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling."
This is bizarre. By any reasonable calculation of annual tire-inflation and tune-up savings, the Outer Continental Shelf holds nearly a hundred times as much oil.

Cars built in the last 15 years or so... you CAN’T tune up. The computer systems in these cars do that Constantly.
Inflating tires, good Idea... any further increase in mileage, would only come if we could fill the tires with the HOT AIR coming from the LIBERALS in Washington.

Well said. The problem is we haven’t been doing either.
Once again, the one word I never see in any of these stories is “WEIGHT”. The typical small car of 1965 was a thousand pounds lighter than today’s typical small car, which is inexcusable in our present age of miracle materials. Honda Civics and Accords and cars of similar size should weigh 1300 - 1800 lbs.

Not many people want to ride in a car that would have a 100% kill-rate in any 30 mph accident.

Good point but there are systems in common use that would preclude that..example: some of the technology used to keep drivers alive in race cars.

I also don't believe in mandatory conservation as dictated by the government. The CAFE standards were a complete flop, as people moved to trucks and SUV's to replace the utility of the former full-sized station wagon. And the 55 mph speed limit was a complete joke. If anything, we ought to be able to travel at over 100 mph in individual cars by now. The technology is certainly there.
Indeed - my 1983 3000 pound, 28 mpg Ford Ranger is now a 4000 pound 21 mpg heavyweight. Even the Escape has gained a few hundred pounds in the last 4 or 5 years. This is all due to the safety nazis who have decided to mandate certain safety standards rather than let people decide for themselves what safety features they want on their car.
Imagine the performance and mileage you'd get with today's engines in the cars of 20 years ago.

Should that not be the choice of the person buying the vehicle? I mean, people buy motorcycles and those don't do all that well in a 30 mph headon crash either. But they are fairly good on gas.
The problem I see is that many of these "features" are mandated by government, and we get to pay for them with an extra 500-1000 pounds of weight in our vehicles.
People will buy as much gas as they can afford to. This is the flaw with “encouraging” conservation.
Roll bars, helmets, being strapped in so tight you can hardly move, fire suits, etc etc..

The Democrats’ approach is to keep the price of gasoline and diesel going up, while dangling the prospect of “alternative energy”.
You are exactly right as to the Democrats’ reliance on “environmentalists”, and their unwillingness to do anything that runs counter to the “global warming” scam.

Carbon arrows are lighter and stronger than aluminum too but half the time they explode on impact with anything solid, while aluminum just bends.
Your last contact with carbonfibre arrows appears to be ten or fifteen years in the past. The newer ones can be shot into trees with safari bows without damage other than to the tree.

Strong is a relative term and has no bearing on resistance to impact.
It really doesn't sound like you've kept up with archery.
