James Clavell never wrote a novel called Hong Kong. Perhaps you are thinking of Tai-Pan or Noble House.

That's what I get for posting too fast and when I'm really tired. I knew that title didn't look right. It was Noble House of which I was thinking. Thanks for thumping me gently on the head!

Noble House was made into a fairly decent TV miniseries, with Pierce Brosnan as Ian Dunross, back in the late 1980s. Particulars of the story, such as the time period, for example, were changed, but the bulk of the story was the same.

I had (still have) original VHS tapes of that, but they were finally wearing out. However, the miniseries was FINALLY released on DVD in the U.S. earlier this year. (It's been available on DVD overseas for years.) Good stuff.
