Why Haven't More Blacks Jumped the Democrat Ship?
B&R ^ | July 7, 2008 | Bob Parks

Posted on 07/08/2008 6:31:26 AM PDT by Fox_Mulder77

I felt the following quote requires some further commentary…

"I'm confused as to why any African American would be a Republican in this day and age." — Robin Wright-Jones, (D) Missouri State Representative

With all due respect to Representative Wright-Jones, I can't understand why more blacks haven't jumped the Democrat ship.

Granted, with decades of vilification, I can understand why people decide to avoid the public ridicule one would be exposed to as a black Republican. While many, including former Washington D.C. mayor Marion Barry, mistakenly believe (for example) President Lincoln was a Democrat, the belief that Democrats are the real friends of blacks are built on many false premises and deliberate revisionist history.

I don't personally seek to see all blacks become Republicans tomorrow, as I don't think it in anyone's best interest to "own" an entire electorate. When politicians don't have to work to keep their seats and improve the conditions in their districts, the people suffer.

In heavily Democrat districts, black people are suffering. Some of it is self-inflicted and some is definitely due to the intentional neglect of politicians who seek to keep that suffering intact, purely for the purpose of getting reelected. If politicians actually had to improve conditions or lose their jobs, things could and would be different. That just so happens in most other areas that are "politically competitive".

I am confused as to why any African American would be a Democrat in this day and age as blacks are church-going people.

According to Michelle Obama that would be tantamount to leaving the Black Community and turning your back on Black Culture.

Perhaps these people find a degree of comfort living on the RAT party plantation. By and large they are given a pass when it comes to personal responsibility and accountability, and aren’t held to high expectations or standards.

It must really suck to have such a low self esteem.

I have long maintained that the GOP needs to do a better job of outreach to the black community. It's a difficult, often thankless task, but it's important. Since the Dems currently get 90% of the black vote, every black American who votes for a Republican pretty much means one less vote for the democrat and one more vote the Republican -- that's a big ROI.

The long history (over 150 years) of Democrats screwing blacks should be more widely known.
The deleterious affects of the New Deal on black Americans should be known.
The deleterious affects of the Great Society on black Amewricans should be known.
The decay in inner cities controlled today by Democrat politicians should be known.

If Barack Obama is somehow torpedoed by Hillary and if 2008 becomes the year when blacks realize how they've been stabbed in the back (again) by the Democrats, the GOP should be in a position to demonstrate our common values (pro-life, anti-homosexual marriage, pro-church, anti-illegal immigrant, pro-law-and-order, school vouchers, etc.). It could be a real turning point.

But I'm not going to hold my breath.

“marion berry’s funny!

Marion Berry is also supporting a moron that doesn’t know how many states make up the good old USA, and seems to have no clear understanding as to the function of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, yet has all but declared himself to be POTUS without benefit of an election.

Mr. Berry really should go into rehab, though I seriously doubt it would do much good.

Probably at least ninety percent of black people in my area think Lincoln was a democrat.Probably ninety nine plus percent think the republican party is the party of choice for white racists. Somebody needs to wake up. There is a lot room for black people in the real world now, not many want to live there anymore.

Why Haven't More Blacks Jumped the Democrat Ship?

Because most aren't educated enough in American history. When people of any color consider the 3/5ths clause as something evil, you know right off the bat you are dealing with a moron.

The peer pressure is enormous and spans generations.

Whatever can be said about Black voters and the democRAT party can be said about White voters in South Louisiana and elswhere. My mom told me to "register democrat, because the republicans are for rich people". This attitude keeps poor white people poor, ignorant, and tools for perpetual corruption. I'm guessing that the pressure is worse if you are black, judging from my Black GOP college friends experience.

With all due respect to Representative Wright-Jones

Why is she or any other member of her party due any "respect" at all?

IMO, the 'Rats are due plenty of contempt, especially from the black community that they've decimated through family-killing government dependency.

But I'm not going to hold my breath.

Yeah, don't do that! The black community's dependance on government is maddening. It's like an addiction.

Ask any Dem black American about an issue and the first thing they'll do is focus on the failure of government, or the government's inability to accurately define issues facing the black community: they never consider the fact that big government solutions never work, or that personal responsibility should always trump any government solution.

They're always looking for the perfect politician to come along and save the world....... which is why Obama-if elected- will disappoint every last one of them. They think he's the answer they've been waiting for..... but he's really just a typical politician with old ideas based on the politics of the 1920's and 30's.

True. I'm not a fan of Charles Barkley, and I'm not sure of his current political leaning, but I recall some years ago, his mother found out that he was a Republican. She said, "Charles! How could you? Only rich people are Republicans!" He said: "Momma, I am rich!"

I don't actually agree that "only rich people are Republicans" but it shows a degree of peer pressure in the black community that Republicans are "the other" they cannot be "us".

The ignorance you describe isn’t confined to blacks, of course. I recently saw a quote of Winston Churchill along the lines of “The best argument against democratic rule is to spend five minutes talking to a member of the electorate” or something to that effect. An old friend of mine often says that “Average is pretty stupid.” And, sadly, he is right.

The vast majority of voters has no inkling as to what the issues even ARE, much less what position might or ought to be taken regarding those issues. As you suggest, Americans’ knowledge of history is abysmal. It is hard to determine just what drives the vote of most in America. Not only blacks, but most people tend to vote as their parents do/did, or to base their vote on superficial matters, including, but certainly not limited to race, appearance, and I fear, what the polls say about how everyone ELSE is voting.

Fortunately, at least for now, the constitution protects us from ourselves.

Black Democrats legally siezed power in many of our urban areas years ago...the results of their leadership are pretty clear...yet they keep getting re-elected....where’s the “CHANGE” mantra there?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I agree that type of ignorance is not confined to blacks by any means, I only meant that they have tunnel vision regarding the democrat party.
I don’t understand the line I quoted above, how can the constitution protect us from ourselves? The constitution is being trampled in the dust every day, in my view most of what government does today is in violation of the constitution.

It will probably take an extraordinary Conservative black politician to kill the monopoly the rats have on them.

Any group that is monolithic in their voting habits is ripe for abuse.
