Mountain Lion May Have Killed New Mexico Man
ground report ^ | June 21, 2008 | Betty McMahon

Posted on 06/23/2008 1:53:46 PM PDT by george76

People in the Silver City/Pinos Altos, New Mexico, vicinity are nervously looking over their shoulders these days, fearing they may be the next meal for a mountain lion prowling the area...

On Friday, the body of Robert Nowojski, 55, was found about 75 yards from his Pinos Altos home, severely mauled and partly fed upon.

The animal would not leave until Game and Fish officers shot at it.

Although not yet confirmed with an autopsy, authorities suspect the lion is responsible for the fatal attack. Hunters with hounds are now tracking the animal.

Several people reported sightings of the mountain lion to the Game and Fish department in the past several weeks.

The big cat has been in other neighbors' backyards and even looked into their windows.

The animal has not shown a fear of humans

My house cats don't have any fear of humans why should something that can kill you in one leap have any?

Glad you found a source to post this story. The local papers that originally printed this can’t be posted here and were very hesitant to say this gentleman was killed by a mountain lion.

It’s been a while since a cougar killed anyone. They are still hunted and very wary. In the last decade I’ve only seen one.

Of course, there was one that was eyeing the playground at a local day care. It was treed and dispatched before it gathered up any snacks.

The USFWS often says the same about wolves killing livestock.

Unless an official is present before, during, and after the attack...often the government refuses to make a determination. The defenders of the predators are pleased as the rancher gets no money for his losses.

The liberals can say that they offered restitution knowing that the money is not forthcoming.

Even thought the local papers printed it it seemed like someone was trying to keep this out of the mainstream news.

The enemedia is working overtime to bury the truth.

Their fellow travelers are not interested in accuracy.

WTH ?? A guy has been eaten, practically in his own backyard...the animal who did it is right there,, and they're trying to "shoo" it off ? SHOT AT IT !!??? It would seem to me we would want to shoot it dead right where it was, lest some other unfortunate become it's next meal.......

On 5/24 we ( my granddaughter and I) were just about ready to hike down Bright Angel Trail at the Grand Canyon when we saw what we thought was a bobcat move across a parking lot and into a ledge at the trail head. It turned out to be a young mountain lion (cougar) which we were able to photograph. We reported it to the rangers who said they'd probably have to relocate him. Evidently, he'd gotten so used to people that the hikers didn't faze him. It sure did us! Lew, in Ks. Photobucket

“But We now know that if we are going to have [mountain lions] around, maybe they’re going to eat us every now and then. I’m comfortable with that.”
Dr. Paul Beier

I wonder if the latest cat snack would agree with the obviously sociopathic comment of Beier.

George, to receive restitution in these case requires signing a nondisclosure agreement. Anyone who took the cash can't talk about it, not even to dispute the envirowackies that claim no restitution has ever been paid.

I don't know where the he** you live but pumas kill people in CA regularly. It hasn't "been a while since a cougar killed someone" it has only been a few months. Try a web search, it is your friend. In CA we can't hunt them, they stalk and kill humans at a constant rate of about 2 or 3 per year, not a lot, unless you happen to be one of the 2 or 3.

They aren't hunted in Calif. But should be...

We can now shoot them here in Okla.....IF they are attacking livestock or threatening humans.

They are here....but in what numbers...know one really knows for sure.

A number of residents in the area have heard that an unidentified individual had been feeding the mountain lion at least for the last month as a means of getting photographs of the animal.

I hope that individual(s) got his/her photo. /s
