The UN Human Rights Council said the UK must "consider holding a referendum on the desirability or otherwise of a written constitution, preferably republican".
The council has 29 members including Saudi Arabia, Cuba and Sri Lanka.
It was the Sri Lankan envoy who raised concerns over the British monarchy.
The resulting report said Britain should have a referendum on the monarchy and the need for a written constitution with a bill of rights.

Hey you snooty girly men, see where your arrogance and ignorance is getting you?
Join the rabble, Join us in riding the world of the UN forever.
Hear Me Now, Believe Me Later
I’d love for The Queen to tell Banky to kiss her royal hiney.
The u.n., when not raping and killing babies, they’re attacking old women.
Not to mention the top-notch dental care.
What we are looking at here are harbingers of things to come. The UN is acting a if were a foregone conclusion that their man in the US, Hussein Obama, were already elected. We’ll see a lot more of UN tyranny with Obama in there, count on it.
It would be nice if this new mayor of London was prime minister. He might go Thatcher one better in telling the UN where to get off.
Boy that would be nice if we can get someone in charge with a big pair. Out of the UN and get the un out of the us.
England has the best constitution in the world. Of course it isn't a written constitution. That would bring up questions of language and other matters of endless debate.
I honestly thought this was satire. See, once upon a time there was this King named John...and then a few hundred years later there was this other guy named Cromwell...I mean, I'm just suggesting that it's entirely possible that the Brits have already sort of worked this thing out among themselves without (gasp!) the UN's help. It's like the British ambassador to Saudi Arabia saying "Know what, chaps? This place could really be improved if you'd just bring in a little sand..."
You don't get out much, do you?
That mess up comment that so trueeee LOLOLOL!
That be pay pre event seeing Maggie Thatcher tell Saudis and UN where to go LOL!
I pony up 49.95 for that event LOL!
What about all the other countries that have a monarch as well Belgium, Spain and Holland to name a few are these to be told what to do as well.
I thought that though Brown is doing his best to erode it at present hence why the Tories are opposed to the 42 days detention without charge which is confusing people as they are suposed to be the party for security.
No I want to keep the crown I like the idea of the head of State being apart from politics.
I see close up being involved with this forum the problem when the head of government is also head of State how to be above politics when politics got there in the first place. Very difficult and why often your President does get criticised (regardless of who it is) for not jumping into the fight and getting his hands dirty because it may well at the time he is performing a State duty which you cannot mix with the political issue.
I always remember the ultimate snub Maggie gave Royalty when she took the victory salute after the Falklands because of course it should have been the Queen as the PM does not have any ceremonial role with our armed forces. It is the crown that our troops swear allegiance to of course in practice it is the government of the day that determines their international role.
I couldn't give a dime for the British Monarchy, but I might even contribute if donations were being collected to tear down the UNO complex, float it all out (with 2/3 of the international delegates) on barges, and sink it in the middle of the Atlantic.
Has not the US citizenry learned yet that the UNO is nothing but an organization designed to destroy the national sovereignty of the USA and Her allies, and rob us of our national wealth by Marxist redistribution to the South and to the East?
My, my, Mr. Truman !!
And I hope to encourage Americans to keep tagging the ‘O’ on the back of UN. It is the UNO. It is an organization, not a legitimate government by any means.
Gradually over the years employers have had to bring female wages up to a similar level as male wages. It is very difficult to advertise a job and make it clear that you only want one particular sex to apply.
I like it
Regardless of anyone's view of the monarchy there, or of Parliament, for that matter, I pray the UK will send the UNO packing when its agencies pretend to interfere with the UK’s sovereignty.
And regardless of anyone's individual view of current international conflicts, we appreciate the UK’s steady friendship in difficult times.
