For an All-Organic Formula, Baby, That’s Sweet

Amy Chase started feeding Similac Organic infant formula to her second son, Amos, as soon as he was born in November 2006.

“When I saw the organic at Publix, I bought it, no questions asked,” said Ms. Chase, a self-described “yoga mom” in Atlanta.

Like Ms. Chase, many American parents have rushed to embrace Similac Organic formula, even though it sells for as much as 30 percent more than regular Similac. In 2007, its first full year on sale, it captured 36 percent of the organic formula market, with sales of more than $10 million, according to Kalorama Information, a pharmaceutical-industry research firm. (Similac’s parent company, Abbott Laboratories, does not release sales figures for individual products.)

Parents may be buying it because they believe that organic is healthier, but babies may have a reason of their own for preferring Similac Organic: it is significantly sweeter than other formulas. It is the only major brand of organic formula that is sweetened with cane sugar, or sucrose, which is much sweeter than sugars used in other formulas.

No health problems in babies have been associated with Similac Organic. But to pediatricians, there are risks in giving babies cane sugar: Sucrose can harm tooth enamel faster than other sugars; once babies get used to its sweeter taste, they might resist less sweet formulas or solid foods; and some studies suggest that they might overeat, leading to rapid weight gain in the first year, which is often a statistical predictor of childhood obesity.

Asked about these concerns, Carolyn Valek, a spokeswoman...

--snip--

“Recent studies show that animals have a clear preference for sucrose over other sugars,” Dr. Araujo said. And eating sucrose, he said, generates future cravings for sucrose; other sugars tested, like fructose and glucose, do not have the same long-term effect...

Disaccharides are formed when a dehydration reaction occurs between two monosaccharides. Notice that the two monosaccharide units are joined by an ether linkage. One of the most common disaccharides is sucrose, which is composed of one glucose and one fructose molecule.

glucose + fructose --> sucrose + H2O (It's a dehydration reaction in this direction, although the reaction is reversible. If it wasn't, we couldn't live. Your brain only works on glucose, aka dextrose.)

IIFC, didn't one of those recent articles on high fructose corn syrup say that fructose was sweeter than sucrose or glucose?

My thought, exactly!

If she is REALLY serious about organic, then she would breastfeed her child....

Yeah, that...

Unless the mother has built up fat-soluble toxins that she’s off-loading in the milk...

Some women can’t breast feed. I couldn’t.

Some women don’t make enough milk, or it’s physically impossible to breastfeed due to extraordinary circumstances. All docs encourage breastfeeding now. It’s not just milk.

Yeah, my wife didn’t want to and I don’t blame her. It also seems like you have feed a lot more frequently with breast feeding.

feed more frequently = more bonding opportunities = more secure child.

It’s more than just a feeding time for the baby, or should be.

"The Art of Money Getting"

Someone recently told me about J. Paul Getty's three rules for making money:

1. Get up early every morning.
2. Work hard.
3. Find oil.

oh, Iknow my son constantly breastfed when he was little. Now he is a 6’3” handsome young man. Smart as a whip. I never bought formula. But then I stayed at home to raise both of my children.

I was only able to breastfeed my first son for six months. Thankfully I was able to breastfeed my second son for fourteen months. Both are incredibly smart and healthy. In fact, the oldest is gifted and his younger brother is following right in his footsteps.

I know that breastfeeding helped with that, but we also nurture a healthy lifestyle (good food choices, daily supplements, activity, etc.). I, too, am a stay-at-home mom. I’m blessed!
