“But the unit passed an inspection conducted by the city on Friday, and the proper permits were in place for the raising of the crane that was taking place when the crash occurred.”
That only means the proper bribes took place.
Has the un sent in peacekeepers yet?

Godspeed.
The construction official at Bloomberg’s presser said there’d been 13 violations at the site in 27 months, none concerning the crane. Someone in the crowd asked if that was a normal number of violations. The official said “Yes.”
The same guy said there was a stop work order in effect at the site for something else.
That was an idiotic violation of OSHA. He was supposed to be "tied off" as we say, with a safety lanyard. Heck, if I'm even SIX feet off the floor on a job, I have to have a safety harness on and the lanyard connected, so if I fall I can't hit the floor.
Wonder how much the city's safety inspectors are being paid to wink at things like this.
Of course they have, it's Fubar.
This guy needs his tongue cut out.
Is it the inspector's job to make sure everyone who is supposed to be "tied off" is tied off, all the time?
I thought we all agreed the Nanny State was a bad thing.
Of course, in the days when newspapers had copy editors, they might be wrong, but at least they were consistent. At least they kept their story straight on what it was made out of.
It isn’t a nanny state when people on both sides of the deal expect bribes to be paid. Instead, it’s an extortion racket, going under the guise of a nanny state. I’m not sure which is worse. Neither apparently isn’t an option.
enough of what? Crane collapses?
He’s alluding to unlicensed construction. The city can’t control it.
I agree with the man who said, “Enough, already!”
New York City is being overbuilt and overtaken, often by foreign interests.
What is Bloomberg going to do about this?
Meantime, he worries about smokers in bars. What a joke!
maybe they should be outlawed.

There's a lot of crane action going on down at Ground Zero tonight.
The biggest, street-legal Liebherr I've ever seen -- it's longer than a Greyhound bus, and 3 of its counterweights require a semi to carry them -- is there. Currently it is being used to assemble a massive Manitowac track crane -- the kind where it takes a semi to bring in one track.
Things are finally starting to hit momentum down there.
Earlier, two flatbeds waited all day to unload one massive steel beam each. I learned that they are manufactured upstate.
I'd like to know what the Leibherr costs; I guess 10k per day of service off the top of my head.
This can't be true. I once visited NY City on a windy day. I saw more debris than I could stomach being blown off high rise construction. Four dead and about 13 injured is small potatos in building disaters. NY City is a big place. I'll more died building the Brooklyn Bridge. Wait! Google is my friend. Ah
BROOKLYN BRIDGE FACTS, HISTORY, and INFORMATION
Ok more dead in one project but not in one day. I'm sure some historian can dig up a much worse day.
On the way to becoming a no-story.
“FUBAR”??
How appropriate is that title now? :-(
Prayers for the injured and families of the dead.
