“But the unit passed an inspection conducted by the city on Friday, and the proper permits were in place for the raising of the crane that was taking place when the crash occurred.”
That only means the proper bribes took place.

On January 14th, a construction worker pouring concrete fell 42 stories to his death at the construction site of the new Trump Hotel in SoHo when a plank he was standing on gave way. That was an idiotic violation of OSHA. He was supposed to be "tied off" as we say, with a safety lanyard. Heck, if I'm even SIX feet off the floor on a job, I have to have a safety harness on and the lanyard connected, so if I fall I can't hit the floor.
Wonder how much the city's safety inspectors are being paid to wink at things like this.

"We lost at least four people - innocent victims, innocent construction workers - on this most beautiful day on the East Side," said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. "People are going to be going to funerals - if that does not rev up people's anger to say enough is enough - we've got to work this out." This guy needs his tongue cut out.

collapsed onto a four-story brick townhouse at 305 East 50th Street ...The small, brick three-story building at 305 East 50th StreetOf course, in the days when newspapers had copy editors, they might be wrong, but at least they were consistent. At least they kept their story straight on what it was made out of.

I agree with the man who said, “Enough, already!”
New York City is being overbuilt and overtaken, often by foreign interests.
What is Bloomberg going to do about this?
Meantime, he worries about smokers in bars. What a joke!

...in what the mayor called "one of the worst [construction accidents] the city has had." This can't be true. I once visited NY City on a windy day. I saw more debris than I could stomach being blown off high rise construction. Four dead and about 13 injured is small potatos in building disaters. NY City is a big place. I'll more died building the Brooklyn Bridge. Wait! Google is my friend. Ah
BROOKLYN BRIDGE FACTS, HISTORY, and INFORMATION
Ok more dead in one project but not in one day. I'm sure some historian can dig up a much worse day.

I used to do pub crawl in this nabe back in the day. Operating a crane is not as dangerous as it used to be, but is (duh) far from being free of risk.
Interesting that your parents once lived in the Turtle Bay area. There used to be a great pizzeria/Italian restaurant on 2nd near 52nd called Rocky Lee, but it is no more.
