Jacksonville, North Carolina, January 26, 2008 The NC Gathering of Eagles sponsored an Operation to demonstrate support for and celebrate the American Military. Hundreds of people came to Jacksonville, from all over North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and West Virginia. They spread out along Highway 17 waving American and Marine flags and holding signs proclaiming respect, admiration and gratitude to the men and women of the United States Military. GOE National Director, Larry Bailey reports:
In response to the pitiful gathering of Westboro Baptist Church miscreants near Camp Lejeune, NC, on 1/26/08, the North Carolina chapter of Gathering of Eagles organized a support-the-troops rally alongside a 300-yard stretch of US 17. Scores of flags and hand-painted signs adorned the route, and the Eagles stayed at their posts despite a continuing cold drizzle.....

Instead of facing the misguided Phelps clan directly, GoE-NC took the high road and held a massive military appreciation rally down the road that overwhelmed the Phelps's evil bleatings.

Excellent
One could wonder how many of those Amercian Flags lifted into the breeze started their journey in some Camp/FOB in Iraq or Afghanistan, where raised for call to colors then presented to some military family in due time.
If you are referring to flags covering coffins, you will see that none of those flags are long enough for the purpose you describe. If instead, families can receive flags flown in war zones through some other purpose, that's awesome.
Here in the DC area, many folks apply for and receive large flags flown over the Capitol for special presentations, gubmint retirees, et cetera.
Having been to many of these types of events, I can tell you that the people who come are people who have American flags because they like to have them. They fly them on their houses and cars, hang them outside on holidays, and/or purchased them especially to wave at 4th of July parades in their home towns or for demonstrations of this sort.
I personally have 3 or 4 American flags on display in my living/dining room at all times, and others throughout the house and I'm one of the tamer patriots of the DC Chapter, with no present military connections and no military deaths in our family since the Civil War, although all of my uncles, several cousins and both brothers served, and came home alive, from WWII to Korea to peacetime to Vietnam. We also had warriors in the Revolution back in the 1770's.
Thanks be to God, it's still a popular thing for people to display the American flag without it necessarily being connected to a war or a battle. I understand that Londoners are not allowed to fly the Union Jack on their homes because it's offensive to their many Muslim neighbors. On their behalf, I say:
Thanks for the pingout, lady!
Amen, RockerMom! Thanks for your post!
