“Yeah, instead of teaching commie propaganda they actually have to teach reading, writing and math. Boo-hoo!”

Nope. Again, it sounds good on paper: Hey, they’re teaching good ol’ 3 R’s. But that is the simplistic view, and it absolutely ignores the very serious flaws in this program. They are simply teaching very specific things for a very specific test. It’s cookie-cutter teaching. Yes, the students might get good scores on the test. So that must mean the program is working, eh? NO! All it means is that they were able to pass this (pretty inadequate, if you’ve seen it) test. THAT’S IT.

Other subjects, such as history and writing and composition, those subjects go out the window. Even creative thinking and creative, tailored curriculum on the “three R” subjects go out the window, too, because there can be no deviation from the curriculum that is designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to get a good score on the all-important TEST.

I know a whole bunch of conservative-minded teachers (and some dems too), and all of them, without exception, HATE NCLB. The most conservative one of the bunch told me that “it is the worst thing that has happened to education in a long, long time.”

And I know of no elementary school teacher, liberal or conservative, that would prefer teaching “commie propaganda” to his or her kids if given the chance. Gimme a break!

Since the items mentioned aren’t happening and won’t ever be happening in this life, we’ll just have to play the hand. They are way beyond any econ theory.

The unfortunate thing is that even if they never CHOOSE to cut the entitlement programs or pork barrel and such, these cuts will occur anyway due to the economic meltdown that will almost certainly occur in the coming decades due to the (what was it 50 trillion dollar I heard?) entitlements we've booked ourselves for for this baby boomer generation. The money may very well simply run OUT. The programs will falter or fall altogether because we simply won't have the money to run them.

So my thought is, they'll have to deal with the economic theory one day whether they like it or not.

The Pres mentioned that in the SOTU. Congress has to deal with the entitlements and not just let it slide year after year.

“We already KNOW the NEA hates NCLB and will do anything to get rid of it. If that socialist union hates it, it’s a good law.”

If every educator across the board hates it, is it still a good law?

That has been my experience. Have not met an educator yet that thinks it’s worth anything.

What planet do you live on?? The only thing standing in the way of Nuclear is the gummit and specifically the Dems.

To pretend that this Country has any Free Market is laughable. Nuclear is the cleanest, safest and most efficient form of energy ever invented and we can’t develop it thanks to brainwashed fear.

Pray for W and Our Troops

Don't worry. My feet are securely standing on planet Earth. :)

What's funny is in a way we're agreeing with each other. I said that I felt the government should leave it be and let the market deal with this. The government SHOULDN'T get in the way of our development of nuclear fuels for private use. If you say that there is no free market, then we need to get busy eliminating the federal government's control over the free market---not expanding it by adding more federal funds. Wherever federal funds go, federal regulations go. So whenever the president or anybody in Washington starts talking about encouraging development of alternative fuels (whether it be nuclear or whatever) by funding its research with federal money, I know it's usually going to be a bad idea.

So in short, I'm okay with nuclear energy---just not if it's to be done by way of federal funding.

I pray you are right.

I have a fear, a sense, that we are living in the middle of a paradigm shift in history that comes along every so many hundred years = and determines the coming path of humankind.

Unsettling.

But Thank God, literally, that we have had this man at the helm for the past 7+ years. At least we have a chance of coming out on the right side...if we keep the evils ones out for the next 8 years. By that time, many of these will be renderded "null and void"

You may well be right.

One thing I know. God is always in control. There has never been a president that was not there to serve God’s purposes whether that president was a God fearing man or not.

If Hillary or Obama become POTUS, I literally believe it will be an indication that God’s timetable is ramping up. While I do not relish the wrath that is to come, God will have his way and either on of those two will play into it.

GWB and his daddy were born and raised in the northeast ...

Well, I guess you could say that since he didn't move to Texas until he was 2 YEARS old.

With that kind of grasp on the facts, I guess we should bow to your expertise

too much putting mouth in gear before brains engaged these days,

believe it will be an indication that God’s timetable is ramping up.

That thought has flitted across my mind also.

2012 is a surprisingly universal prediction date...

However, I believe that God's warnings are always contingent what we do - He leaves it up to us to choose the ultimate outcome...by our actions, be they as individuals or as countries.

If we fight the good fight, if we don't give up = we may get through this and avoid adverse consequences - It worries me though that God isn't going to brook many more years of killing his little souls He sends here...

Was a great speech. God bless your president, a truely great and decent man as well as leader.

On a side note - next time Brit Hume when the president is exiting, just keep your darn mouth shut.

Honest to god, it’s far more interesting to listen to a few minutes of the president being fairly candid as he speaks to friend and foes alike than to hear Brit and his guests stating the obvious.

So now I’m not a “true” conservative since I expect immigrants to come to this country legally?

How can you base any issue as a principled issue if you ignore the fact that these people are here illegally {as far as I know illegal still means its against the law}

What you are in fact saying is that you are not principled.

“Do any of you have the courage to come back to these threads later and read your ludicrous words again? And admit, in your hearts of hearts, that you said something REALLY STUPID?

I doubt it.”

Turns out that there was no need for me to watch the SOTU last night because all of the half dozen conservatives that I have lunch with, on a daily basis, watched it. Real conservatives. Pillars of their communities. Active in their churches. Three of them work full time where I do AND run their own businesses on the side. Real conservatives.

I wish I had gotten my lunch to go and ate it in my office. I have never seen this particular group so cranky and upset in the nearly 17 years that I have known most of them. They were having a very bad day.

The general concensus was that the conservative movement is on life support.

When asked if I had watched the SOTU, I replied: “And be all wound up like you? No, thanks.”

I stand by my words.

Never doubt me.

All the best to you.
