Star of Bethlehem
Michael R. Molnar ^ | 1997 | Michael R. Molnar

Could the purchase of an ancient coin have led to an important clue about the Star of Bethlehem? The above illustration is a Roman coin from Antioch, Syria which shows the zodiacal sign, Aries the Ram. In trying to understand the meaning behind this coin, I found that Aries was the sign of the Jews. Realizing that this is where ancient stargazers would have watched for the Star of Bethlehem, I embarked on searching for the celestial event that signified the birth of the Messiah in Judea. Superposed on the photograph of the coin is what I found: Jupiter underwent two occultations ("eclipses") by the Moon in Aries in 6 BC. Jupiter was the regal "star" that conferred kingships - a power that was amplified when Jupiter was in close conjunctions with the Moon. The second occultation on April 17 coincided precisely when Jupiter was "in the east," a condition mentioned twice in the biblical account about the Star of Bethlehem.

We had some interesting hypotheses of the Star of Bethlehem on this thread:

The author of this piece doesn’t believe ancients connected a comet with the birth of a king.

As a matter of fact, Halley’s comet made an appearance in 1066 and it was viewed, correctly it would appear, as a sign of something threatening and ominous, not positive.

I always think of Jesus as the star of Bethlehem.

Everyone else was just support staff.

Merry Christmas!

Halley’s comet was distinguishable as a comet by the naked eye. Most comets aren’t — they require a telescope for that determination, and telescopes weren’t invented until 15 centuries after Christ.

My favorite explanation for the star of Bethlehem is that the star the wise men were following was one thing (they followed it for days and nights, it was an auspicious astrological sign for them) — and that the light that shone down from the same area of the sky was something else — “...and the Glory of the Lord shone all around them (the shepherds), and they were sore afraid.” Can you imagine what the Glory of the Lord would look like at night? That’s my theory; good as any, better than most.

Merry Christmas to you too.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Beautiful Star of Bethlehem is one of my favorite bluegrass Christmas songs.
I have a recording of it by Clifton Preddy that I play year round.
