Buchanan's troubling diagnosis
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | December 1, 2007 | Bill Steigerwald

Posted on 12/02/2007 7:46:40 AM PST by 3AngelaD

Pat Buchanan's latest book, "Day of Reckoning: How Hubris, Ideology, and Greed Are Tearing America Apart," paints a gloomy picture...At home, Buchanan says, our political leaders can't get it together to protect our southwestern borders from an invasion of illegal immigrants. And because they nearly all idolize the ideology of "free trade," we can't preserve our jobs, industries or the value of our currency....

Q: What must we do first and foremost about foreign policy?

A: One, a complete review of all of America's commitments to go to war on behalf of foreign nations and basically letting some of these alliances lapse and telling these countries, like the Europeans, "Look. You're big, fat and rich and you're more numerous than we are. You've got more money than we do. You've got more people than we do. It's time you take the primary burden of your own defense." And we shut down bases and we bring the troops home from all over the world, particularly Korea and Europe...We can come to their aid, but the first providers in terms of defense are going to be these countries themselves.

The second is to secure the southwestern border of the United States with a fence...and enforce the immigration laws. You have to tell folks if they sneak into the country and have a child here, that child is not an automatic American...But the steps on (fixing) illegal immigration -- 10 of them in the book -- will work. The president is starting to take some steps, with this little part of the fence he's built, and more border patrols, and you've seen a drop of 25 percent in arrests at the border...But you need will, you need courage, and you need conviction. But Bush doesn't believe in it.

I disagree with many of Buchanan's assertions, but he is right about the border, and about letting the Europeans and Koreans worry about and pay for their own defense. We spend more on protecting South Korea than we do on defending our own southern border.

Agreed. Pat’s only about 25% right. Unfortunately about 25% of the time he’s dead wrong, and dangerously so. E.g. tariffs - a trade war won’t help our economy, high productivity and high quality products will.

Pat’s right about so-called “free trade” too.

Worst part is — look at what China is doing, spending our “free trade” dollars on building a Soviet-class military to challenge America.

And then contemplate we are doing precisely the same thing, for the terrorists, with $100 / barrel oil.

Bring on the trade war.

The current situation is not sustainable.

Pat is not really a conservative but sometimes rents a conservative suit for TV.

Skimming the article ... the only thing I agree with Pat is the border crisis. What is worse is these ILLEGALS refuse to assimilate. Instead they want to turn the U.S. into a THIRD WORLD country - what they LEFT. They want to bring US down to their level. Why they LEFT there country is WHAT they are trying to turn US into. THAT is a MAJOR problem.

His isolationist philosophy slips in on the other issues. On these issues I disagree with Pat.

Well, he’s a populist really. Mob rule is not what the founder’s wanted to build here. He does know how to play on people’s fears and ignorance.

Pat is the best analyst of America’s future. He was right about illegal immigration, deficit trade deals will cost America jobs, foreign entanglements will bring war to our shores, abortion and gay practices are bad for this country and RINOs and Neocons have taken over the GOP and converted it to Liberal-lite.

Pat is for America first. Don’t you will everyone was.

I think Buchanan has pretty much nailed the status of the U.S. currently and where we are headed. Unfortunately, I don’t think either party has any interest in changing that direction. Until the American people stop thinking in terms of left and right and realize it’s us, ordinary people, vs. them, the elites, the downhill slide will continue, and not by accident IMO.

How so?

You think making China into the next Soviet Union is a good idea?

You think funding terrorists with billions of our trade dollars is a good idea?

Or are you just brainwashed, and simply refuse to even think about either of those problems? In effect holding your hands over your ears saying “La la la la la free trade is wonderful”...

What does that mean? Can you articulate your thoughts on this? What is BS, and why is it BS?

So-called “free trade” is nothing of the sort. It is, in fact, highly managed.

The only real question is “who is managing it?”

Once upon a time, it was overseen by those who put America first.

Now, not so much...

The following link to me demonstrates what Buchanan’s world view is missing. I will not dispute what open borders has and is doing to US. I consider it a capitalist maneuver to opt out of the monopoly of union wage controls. The ugly side is NOT freedom it requires taxpayers to fund all those benefits that government requires of employers. Capital -ism is going to the dark side.

Also, we're in the middle of a cultural civil war, where one half of America and the other half disagree about the fundaments of right and wrong and morality and immorality.

He's right about this, too. Children in California no longer have mothers and fathers.

Buchanan is right about our porous borders be a threat to our security. However, what I see to be a greater threat to losing our national identity is PC multiculturalism.

Spanish has become ubiquitous in our society and even our government. A Spanish speaker without any knowledge of English you can easily get a driver's license, vote, shop, watch US television, do your banking etc. Even their children in US schools can be educated in Spanish. This needs to end and English should be our official language.

Similarly our Christian heritage is constantly being eroded. PC forces have put Muslim foot baths in our public institutions with public funds, children are taught more about Islam in public schools than Christianity, employers are forced to make concessions to Muslim workers that would never even be considered for Christians or Jews. All this while even the very mention of Christmas in public is almost being banned.

As I said, I don’t agree with Buchanan on everything. I think he is wrong on several vital issues. But he has got this thing right. When he was on Lou Dobbs last week, he said we should bring our troops home from Europe and Korea and station them on the border. I wish that would happen tomorrow.

Why do you think dealing with other countries from a position of dependency is superior to a position of self-sufficiency?
