Paul's supporters disappointed by results
Dallas Morning News ^ | September 2, 2007 | GROMER JEFFERS Jr.

As the vote tallies were announced at the Texas Republican straw poll Saturday, at least one supporter of Rep. Ron Paul of Lake Jackson couldn't contain his frustration.

"Fix!" he yelled from the back of the ballroom at the Fort Worth Convention Center. "There's no way."

The congressman put a great deal of effort into the event in his home state, even paying to bus in supporters. They seemed to be the largest force in town. So it was a disappointment to those supporters when he came in third.

Some were convinced that Dr. Paul won.

"The results are totally wrong," said Jason Scarbrough, a Paul supporter who lives near Houston. "There were 10 times as many Ron Paul supporters here than anyone else had. There's just no way."

Though there were clearly more Paul people at the straw poll event, the congressman with the libertarian leanings had a much smaller base of support among those who could vote.

Even Dr. Paul conceded that he didn't think he could win.

"They made it very restrictive," Dr. Paul said at a rally Friday night. "But we're trying to build the party. If they want us to build the party, we can."

Saturday's vote disappointed Kathy Massey, a 45-year-old Houston woman who works in the petroleum industry.

She described Dr. Paul as a man of integrity who wants the Bill of Rights restored – and a political titan.

"Las Vegas oddsmakers say he's the only one who can beat" Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ms. Massey said, without offering proof.

Oh, that’s right you’re from Wisconsin. And, of course, you’re not a kook.

There's nothing in there about Social Security either, but Ron Paul would not dismantle it on Day One. Leviathan didn't get to be this size overnight and it will take a while to starve it down to a size that would make it Constitutional again.

I don't believe there is any other candidate that has promised to cut or even reduce ONE government program.

Well, I need to add to Ron Paul's slogans. I'll post them below in case you missed them. But here is a good one for you. "Support Ron Paul or else we'll let Hillary win."

See more that he and his supporters may wish to use.

Maybe Ron Paul’s slogan could be “Harm America, not al Qaeda.” Or “Don’t interfere with al Qaeda’s sphere of influence.” Or “Al Qaeda: They’ve got grievances we should recognize.” Or “I’ll represent, Texas, America, and al Qaeda.” Or “Dump Israel. Who needs strategic allies when you can butter up to al Qaeda?” Or “Stop the Mexicans first. Al Qaeda won’t pick our tomatoes.”

EEE: I think the biggest problem Dr. Paul has IS some of his supporters.

I don’t know why, and I’m NOT saying this to bash, attack, or otherwise insinuate anything other than my own observations, but it seems to me many of his supporters register in the lower 90’s. This really makes the sincere and intelligent supporters look bad, as well.

A little house cleaning sure wouldn’t hurt his chances.

I’m just sayin’...

I don’t know the man well, although I hear he thinks of himself as a libertarian. But far as I know, that move he made (after taking the lobbying cash from ‘Women in Govt’) mandating Guardisill vaccine on public school children is NOT very libertarian thing to do. NO CRED.

Just a guess, of course, but perhaps the good doctor doesn't want to starve old people? In years past, voters elected socialists who made commitments to retirees that will have to be honored, if they paid into the system.

Has Ron Paul ever introduced anything? I can honesty say that prior to him showing up at the debates this year, I had never really heard much about him. For a guy who claims to have so many issues he wants to handle, he sure hasn’t done much about them during his time in the House.

Interesting post, mainly because I had a running dialog with a libertarian yesterday who was offended by the idea that I would burn the Constitution in a heartbeat if it stood between my family and their safety. It grew from another argument with Paul supporters and their idea that we should withdraw from the world's stage and let the border patrol defend us or some such rot. What we are doing is "Unconstitutional"

They hit me back with some line about reverence for the document. They were Agnostic it appears.

I pointed out the Bill of Rights and the fact we are endowed, by the Creator, with certain inalienable rights, and the Constitution is there to defend same. He fired back that it works just as well without the "by our Creator" statement, that we are just simply endowed with inalienable rights. Of course I pointed out that it was written as I presented.

The whole of the American experience, all the documents and laws cannot be separated from the divine, yet there are many who have replaced God with a document, worshiping the law. Most are libertarians as far as I can tell.

I have no problem respecting the Constitution, indeed it is the law of a blessed land, but it is God, then Family, then Country. God expects me to protect what he has given me, namely my wife and soon to be child. I do that now by supporting our efforts in a modern nuclear age world

Separating the divine from the constructs of our Republic and it's laws is like Frosted Flakes without the sugar coating.

It leave you with nothing but Flakes...

In this case, the kind that spout the arguments Kirk mentions in you excerpt...

NO.

We have plenty of use for the Constitution, but someone has to be left to enjoy it.

It is not 1789 anymore.

"The results are totally wrong," said Jason Scarbrough, a Paul supporter who lives near Houston. "There were 10 times as many Ron Paul supporters here than anyone else had. There's just no way.

I'm not disappointed at all. Let's consider who was allowed to vote. Specifically the Republican establishment and no one else. This was not a primary open to the general Republican voters. And Rep. Paul still came in third? Behind a protectionist who no one's heard of and a candidate who hasn't officially announced? Hunter is going to spend all his money too early and Fred's not getting the support he was expected to get. Rep. Paul did quite well and another top three placement

Of course the media will try to spin it anyway they can but I am not disheartened at all.
