This Is Democracy....Upsetting the elite(Thomas Sowell)
NRO ^ | July 3, 2007 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/03/2007 6:26:18 AM PDT by IrishMike

With the White House, the leaders of both political parties, and the media all solidly behind the “comprehensive” immigration “reform” bill, how could it be stopped in the Senate, as it was last week? The people stopped it. That is what democracy is all about.

When members of Congress began to be deluged with angry letters, phone calls, and e-mails from their constituents, they knew the game was over — and that their careers could be over if they didn’t pay attention to what the voters were saying.

This bill was an insult to people’s intelligence from start to finish, and the elites are continuing to insult people’s intelligence after being defeated.

Fraudulent arguments were followed by fraudulent procedures to rush this bill through the Senate without committee hearings, with restrictions on debate, and with the specifics of this huge bill being sprung on the Senate at the 11th hour, so that senators would be voting on something they barely had time to read.

Among the fraudulent arguments was that illegal immigrants were taking “jobs that Americans won’t do.” What that really meant was that they were taking low wages that Americans wouldn’t take.

Another fraudulent argument was that “We can’t find and deport 12 million people.”

A much bigger problem than these 12 million people are the tens of millions of additional immigrants who are virtually certain to come in, legally or illegally, if amnesty is extended.

After all, there were only 3 million illegal immigrants the last time an amnesty bill was passed, back in 1986. That’s how we got to 12 million.

With Bush fighting a never-ending “War on Terror,” sending more people to Iraq (many of whom are attempting to seal the borders of IRAQ for God’s sake!) and extending duty tours at the same time really bad people are doing all they can to get really bad stuff (chemical, biological and nuclear) into this country (it’s probably already here) to do really bad things (probably worse than 9-11), why in the hell has he ignored AMERICAN borders that leak like sieves?

Bush obviously thinks securing IRAQ’S border from incursion by murderous thugs and protecting the decent IRAQI citizens from death is more important than securing AMERICAN borders and AMERICAN CITIZENS!

In a saner, more aware time, that sort of behavior would have produced charges of treason.

Alas, those times — like this country’s greatness — are far behind us, probably never to return.

The man is either delusional, schizophrenic or stupid.

Or – worse yet -- part of some plot to alter America forever.

The TRUTH of history almost always comes out. But if out it comes at all, it is almost also ALWAYS after the movers and participants are safely in their graves. Perhaps our great-grandkids will learn the REAL STORY of this illegal invasion and the effort by some to legitimize it in their future Spanish language history books.

What’s going on here today makes a mockery of the rule of law and FOOLS of those who, like my great-great grandparents, stood – and STILL stand – on line to get in here LEGALLY!

Either we’re a nation of LAWS – the United States Constitution being the overarching authority for all subsidiary laws -- or a nation of MEN! If we’ve become the latter, we’d better begin casting about for somewhere else to live and raise a family because history teaches that these sorts of places always get WORSE before getting better. Most stay worse for a long, long time. Cuba comes to mind.

“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in men but BIND THEM DOWN WITH THE CHAINS OF THE CONSTITUTION.” Thomas Jefferson

Over 2 centuries later, that’s STILL sound advice. (Excuse me. Some large folks in ninja outfits at the door...never mind they just battered it down and are...

does anyone actually believe the “12 million” number? It has to be higher than that.

It isn’t the President making the decision to try to seal Iraqi borders. It’s the generals and military.

I’ve heard the 20 million number as being more realistic,
adding the ‘illegals’ family members, all being eligible for legality.

Well said Dr. Sowell. The politicians took us for idiots and fools. It's high time they got slapped down. Some of them have been there so long that they don't recognize that the people rule.

And then you have places like Massachusetts that keep sending the same scum back to Washington so it's no wonder they think like they do.

As usual Dr. Sowell hit a home run. He accurately stated that the Senate thought the voters were too stupid. The absolute arrogance of our elected officials is what galls me.

To further confuse the issue we’re bringing in more low skilled immigrants legally.

Just a few months ago there was a story about a bunch of Somalis who walked off their jobs at a Swift processing plant due to the lack of a “prayer room”.

It was bad enough that swift got caught hiring illegals but the idea that they also bring in angry muslims to work in our food processing plants is a little unnerving.

That’s what happens when the bottom dollar overrides any loyalty to countrymen and national integrity.

One in the same, not too many liberal writers I would consider great, wouldn’t know anyway because I don’t read their opinions.

Thomas Sowell is awesome. Read some of his books on economics. Applied Economics is very good.

Too bad you miss the larger point, to wit

WHY THE HELL ARE IRAQ’S FREAKING BORDERS MORE IMPORTANT THAN OURS??

Still defending the indefensible Mr. Bush?

You live in Iraq, right?

"part of some plot to alter America forever. "

I'll always remember that Dubya's father was the first president to use the words "new world order" publicly - sent chills down my spine.

Maybe one of those generals should run for president in ‘08?

Perhaps THAT might get OUR borders secured.

This isn’t over. The elitist congressional traitors have not given up [evil never does]. They will return again and again with different tactics.

Good article except for one thing, the title and the repeated references of democracy. The United States of America is not a democracy, it’s a Republic. Democrats want us to think it’s a democracy, that’s why they keep repeating it over and over and over again. If this were a democracy, we wouldn’t have a Senate, where each state regardless of size and population get two senators.
