Useful Hysteria ... Border-Bill Critics Have A Point
NY Post ^ | May 22, 2007 | John Podhoretz

THE American Right is up in arms. The new immigration-reform bill announced with great fanfare last week is, say my fellow conservatives, a disaster of Biblical proportions. Virtual spittle is being expectorated all over the senators who negotiated the terms of the bill and the White House, which supports it.

Anti-immigration conservatives are the most vocal people in the country when it comes to saying that our immigration system is broken. But now they have been presented with an "immigration reform" bill that attempts to address some of their concerns, and they're screaming bloody murder about it.

They're right to scream bloody murder. These comprehensive legislative solutions - the sorts of bills that run hundreds of pages in length and are written in impenetrable gobbledygook - are almost always disastrous.

They are jerry-rigged, rickety affairs whose language is inexact and imprecise by design. They often do the opposite of what they are intended to do. The best (or worst) example is the big 1996 bill that was intended to slice away regulation from the telecom industry - and merely ended up handing out gifts to big companies.

Critics of the immigration bill have already gone through it with a fine-tooth comb and found dozens of instances in which tough-sounding provisions are revised and undercut pages later.

Hysteria? Assuming the Presbud is balanced and passed every year for the next 25, with the exception of this bill, the US Budget deficit would increase by 36% from $8.8T to $13.8T after 25 years.

The mere fact that John McCain put his name on it, without first polling the American people, indicates his complete incompetence as a presidential candidate. Add to that his complete meltdown toward Senator Cornyn last week, and you effectively have one less presidential candidate in the 2008 race.

Anti-immigration conservatives are the most vocal people

Notice the labelling as "anti-immigration" instead of the correct term "anti-illegal immigration." Even on FR I've seen very few anti-immigration posts. Framing the critics as bigots/xenophobes is standard MSM practice now.

When Teddy Kennedy says it is a good bill, a big red flag ought to go up.

My father was a Russian immigrant. Came here legally with his parents around 1950. There is NO excuse for not doing it legally. The mechanism is in place for a reason.

Amnesty is not the answer. If those in power think it is, then they need to find other work.

My Dad mentioned something... we all know that Politicians on both sides of the aisle are as frightened about touching immigration as they are about Social Security. They've dragged their feet for years. And after last year's protests they realized they had to at least look like they were addressing it. He suggested that they (politicians) deliberately produced a bill that would be so outrageous to both sides that it would be killed, and could not be re-addressed for 2 or 3 years.

The word “comprehensive” when attached to legislation is a terrific warning sign. They tend to be huge giveaways, earmarks, pork, or downright bribes, while hiding those bits in hundreds of pages of “legislativese.”

The whole “immigration” dispute could be settled quite easily...

When your house if flooding from a broken pipe, you don’t start by bringing in plumbers to give you an estimate about fixing the problem. You turn off the water as the first step.

In this case, the first step is to seal the border, to ensure the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens here in the US are the last ones to come in. Once we’ve cut off the flow of more illegal aliens, then we can discuss what to do with them.

Once legislation has been passed, and the border is sealed for a year or two, THEN we can discuss the next step... It’s pretty simple really.... Fool me once (1986), shame on you. Fool me twice? Shame on me!

Personally, I think that Mexico’s got the right idea with how they treat illegal aliens, although the raping, beatings, and murders are too much. But they don’t like uninvited guests, do they? And if that’s good enough for Mexico to treat uninvited guests into their country, maybe we should be treating uninvited Mexicans in the same way...

Mark

Yes. I'm getting sick of it - I am not "anti-immigration" - heck my ancestors came over here too, like most people's. I am anti-illegal immigration!!!! They are trying to paint us as racist bigots.

I got polled on the phone not too long ago & the girl kept asking me questions on my feelings about "immigration" - I had to constantly correct her & to answer the questions honestly it skewed the whole poll.

My brother-in-law is an immigrant - he came here the legal way & I'm proud for him.

Elitists don't care how it hurts the middle class working folk - they will still live in their gated, secure communities with illegals cutting their grass, etc. They want to take us back to how it was before the USA welcomed us all here as equals. These elitists have infested both parties & are determined to destroy America the Free. They want a permanent underclass to serve them.

Don’t these idiots realize that once we make these present illegals legal that the new “citizens” will demand at least the minimum wage, health benefits, Social Security etc., etc. They will stop being a cheap source of labor and will force industries to search for new sources which will mean more illegals. More illegals to do the jobs that American citizens, old and new, won’t do. This cycle is endless, and we the taxpayers of this once great nation are forced to bear the burden of our elected imbeciles munificence.

ATTENTION John Podhoretz:

Your conservative “friends” ARE NOT ANTI-IMMIGRATION.

We are anti ILLEGAL immigration.

Damn. That is infuriating. Paint us with the broad brush of intolerant bigots? Total BS. I don’t know ONE person opposed to continued legal immigrants becoming Americans.

That is what happened last time; it is what will happen this time.

They didn't try and bring the Ukraine over here. They didn't try to recreate Soviet Russia here in the US. They didn't demand dual-language classes/ballot/drivers license test. They didn't demand handouts or welfare. They didn't send a substantial amount of their ill gotten gains back to the "old country".

They came here legally to be Americans.

Most of the illegals here in the US are here for the scam, not the Freedom. Our government, pandering to the lowest common denominator, is selling us out at an unprecedented rate.

They need to be stopped. Now.

What's stopping you? For the record, I agree with your sentiment. Such blatant abuse of power and violation of our Constitutional Republic surpasses the abuses we suffered as subjects of the British Crown.
