Iraq is a tragic problem for the U.S., but hopefully a temporary one. America's substantial military presence is unlikely to outlast the Bush administration. And though the threat of jihadist terrorism persist, it does not pose an existential threat to America as did the Soviet Union.
Thankfully, like Humpty Dumpty, the old USSR is gone, no matter how hard Vladimir Putin might attempt to put it together again. But there is another potential superpower that makes many Americans uneasy: China.
China is increasingly asserting itself around the globe. With the world's largest population, swiftly growing economy, ancient culture, and authoritarian politics, the People's Republic of China is seen as an almost inevitable American rival. Some analysts even view war as likely

Great article. For the large part, a very sensible, levelheaded piece.
The immediate threat is economic. China is a bubble ready to burst which will have rippling effects here. The good news is that their collapse will make them think twice about foreign ventures.
China clearly does not have to worry about having to defeat us militarily if they can simply bribe enough public officials here to enable themselves to poison us all with food imports which we don’t even need...
Hmmmmm......And who is the ONLY politician out there that addresses this?
“Can a freeper out there explain what exactly existentialism is?”
Existence with an ism. Just joking...I believe it to mean Godlessness myself. Typical form of thinking of the Leftist/Liberal meandering through life with not a clue or belief as to origin of it.
For some reason very controversial topic that begits extremely wordy discussion.
Appreciated. It seems to be used in so many situations that pinpointing a definition is difficult (and the dictionary isn’t much help, either).
The Chinese have been holding meetings with the Russians lately. I think we have positioned ourselves very poorly with the Chinese. But the hidden threat lies in the KGB/FSB driven al Qaeda movement which is global. Litvinenko was poisoned because he identified Zawahiri as a KGB/FSB agent. He also fingered the PM of Italy and mch of their government.
China is not a market economy. It is communist...with enclaves for foreign "capitalists". Ergo: China's economy is not going to sink...unless we sink it. We need to stop the subsidization with FDI and the huge import tab we are running up. China's government...not some mythical "private sector"... is now headed towards a $2 trillion hoard of U.S. dollars.
They will not use it for our good.
Bingo!
This is disengenuous. China is already a very real, very determined, and very dangerous enemy. The FBI and DOD when not under political harassment from the White House admit it.
... and embarking upon a strategy of containment
Who wants mere containment? I want what Reagan insisted upon...VICTORY.
...are far more likely to turn the PRC hostile.
Too late. No amount of appeasement is going to make a silk purse out of this sow's ear. They are already hostile. But of course this guy lives in denial. Amazing Bandow got printed up in the Spectator.
Nor is such a policy sustainable.
Maybe it is. Let's find out, rather than presume "it can't be done."
None of Washington's friends in East Asia are likely to voluntarily turn themselves into a target of China.
Maybe not without a lot of persuasion. I think we have what it takes to do that persuasion. It's called going Cold Turkey. Shutting off their market access if we need to...explain it to them.
Engaging in economic war makes no more sense.
Interesting that Bandow should say this... since in fact he is being counterintuitive. It makes absolutely vital sense. Its a lot better to shut down their trade than to have to start lobbing nukes to redress the dangerous hostilities we face.
Even if such a policy hurt the PRC more than America, it would be mutually destructive.
Oh, like we stop hemhorraging industries right and left and restoring U.S. production is suddenly "destructive"??! Give me a break. It will only be destructive to the Chicoms...and their affiliates here. And if the importers and outsourcers lose their shirts...I think we can live with that. Better sooner than later too, as we go down this slippery slope.
