Ok..say the campus allows the right to concealed carry-—now no one knows who is armed and who isn’t...
BUT
this nutjob knew it was going to end in suicide.
Does anyone think he would care if someone shot back and killed him while he was carrying out his evil deeds?
The problem with suicidal maniacs is: they don’t care that they are going to die.
Sure, the nutjob wants to take out as many people as he can, I just wonder if the possibilty of someone shooting back would be much of a deterrent.
I am a CC permit holder and avoid places where I am not permitted to carry.
I’m only questioning whether or not a whacko cares if he takes return fire. Keep in mind the concept of “suicide by cop”.
Can we logically second guess a person who is NOT logical?...but is crazed, evil and irrational?
Probably not.

“A gun in your purse”

I’m a guy, I don’t have a purse. But I do already have a gun and CCW permit. And I agree that anyone who’s trustworthy enough to have both, should also be trustworthy enough to have them on school property.

What I’m saying is that Cho in particular should’ve never had the chance to even make the attempt. Immigrant + mental problems should equal DEPORTATION.

Exactly what do you have to do to be expelled from VT?

Try legally carrying a concealed weapon with a CCW permit for personal and common protection. It seems that would do it ...

Not just professors (of which he had been one), but there were also corporate execs in the airlines, forestry and technology industries.

He was one of their own. In fact, only the most die-hard liberal would know Who said it: Al Gore or the Unibomber?

“Don’t publish the names and photos of the perps, and certainly don’t publish their manifesto. Deny them the notoriety.”

Excellent suggestion that will never be considered by any media outlet.

1. Stalking a female student 2. Phone harrassment of another female student 3. Court order declaring him "an imminent threat to himself and others" and remanding him to a mental hospital That wasn't enough for you? I did not include his violent writings or his teacher's fear of him.

The student did not press legal charges. This would have been necessary for the school to take action.

The court order is protected medical history.

Are you suggesting medical history should not be protected? Do you want your employer, or education institution to have access to yours?

The school has limitations, just as the police do. They cannot act without justification, and he never went so far as to threaten anyone, that I am aware of. This would have been legal justification, but he did not do it.

We’ve got a new reality TV show here! We’re going to have analysis, ratings, comparisons of the stories presented by the “contestants”, fan clubs, scores of aspirants and wannabees. Sick society.

I did not include his violent writings or his teacher's fear of him.

You are advocating that a writing in a creative writing class proffered by a 23 year old man should be grounds for dismissal?

You are not dealing with a child. Violent writing or thought is not criminal.

In the past few days, some of the suggestions made on FR look like they came from the looney left thought police.

Give some serious thought to how the mental heath system works, and how we as a free society, deal with issues of thought and medical problems.

Great care must be used when the effectiveness of the system depends on voluntary compliance.

Any stigma, scarlet letter or social label that you cause to be applied to someone with a psychological medical need, will certainly cause concern to the patient, and interfere with voluntary compliance.

Frankly speaking, we have the same problems with the AIDs epidemic.

Forced compliance and reporting has resulted in little progress to identify and treat the disease, every time it is tried. Nobody wants that label applied to them.

One can only hope we find a complete cure, and soon.

I think you're missing the point. Stopping a determined murderer with a gun from killing one or two people is not realistically possible BUT stopping him from becoming a mass murderer IS possible if there is a high probability that someone is nearby who can return fire.

It would be almost trivial for a gunman to murder one or two armed cops. How successful would that same gunman likely be in killing more than four with more nearby?

I understand that a mass-muderer such as this one has a sick desire to take out as many people as he can.
An armed retaliation would minimize the number of victims, I just don’t think it would be a deterrent.
Just raising some questions, because I know, I don’t really have any answers.
FReegards and thanks

Has anyone ever heard of a massacre at a gun shooting range? I haven’t. There must be a lesson in there somewhere.

I suspect that had some in the dorm had a weapon handy, the original two may still be dead and a couple of others before he was taken down. If all he wanted was to commit suicide he could do that at the nearest police station. Why didn't he go there? Because he knew they'd fire back, and he knew the school was a safe place for him to go on his murderous rampage.

True; we'll never stop all of the killing, but setting up free-fire zones for these murdering scum is criminal. As I said upthread: Someone with a CCW weapon would have stopped each plane on 9-11; the Long Island Rail massacre (and kept that idiot Mahoney out of Congress!); Colombine; Virginia Tech -- and so many others. We need to get back to taking care of our own security, not relying on some feel-good misconstrued laws -- written and enforced, incidentally, by elites that have paid security around them 24/7.

... I know, I don’t really have any answers. Likewise.

This “treatment” is an opium based narcotic that is NEVER ONCE considered a “cure.” Clinical trials establish a strong link between this type of medication and erratic, suicidal, and violent behavior well beyond what most depressed patients do.

The most likely causes of depression are usually chronic pain based diseases that go undiagnosed. Most depression is a symptom of life-long pain, auto-immune disorders, and digestive problems - not a disease unto itself, a symptom easily masked by opiate narcotics.

The problem is there is no chemical diagnostic for “depression, anxiety, or bipolar.” These labels are thrown around by doctors as quickly as antibiotics.

I’ve had doctors tell me I was all of those things but several years later I learned by my own research that I had an auto-immune disorder. You have to be careful what you complain about to the doctor these days, if I had accepted treatment for those false mental diagnoses, I would probably be dead by now or at least labeled insane.

I totally agree with your thoughts as well. I am against gun-free zones (or any 2nd amend infringment for that matter). This guy had a psychotic vendetta against his classmates (and the world in general), which would explain why he didn't want to just commit suicide. He was whacked out...there is little logic and rationale that we can offer, because this guy doesn't think like you or me. And obviously, the academic liberals learned very little from Columbine. Yes, we're on our own. We came to full realization of that on Sept 11, 2001. If anyone wants a good starting point in regards to personal security, I highly recommend a book written by "Jim Grover"

Street Smarts, Firearms & Personal Security: Jim Grover's Guide to Staying Alive and Avoiding Crime in the Real World." It will change the way you think and move around in your day to day life--forever. Many of the chapters are from Jim Grovers columns in Guns&Ammo magazine, (but he is a leading expert in personal, corporate and gov't security as well. Impressive bio etc) thanks for replying brityank.
