Carla Marinucci: The big guy to the rescue

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton came in first -- barely -- in the 2007 first-quarter fundraising race on the Democratic side, but she's leaving nothing to chance in California: former President Bill Clinton -- hugely popular with Democrats -- will hit the state next week for what's being described as an exclusive campaign breakfast fundraiser for his wife, which will cost $1,000 a person for bacon and eggs April 15 at the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel.

The letter that has gone out to deep-pocketed donors notes that, thanks to the competitive race and the early primaries -- sigh -- candidates must raise "enormous amounts of money" in the presidential race. But even if they've maxed out with $4,600 already contributed to the campaign, they're welcome and it probably wouldn't hurt if they brought more donors, the letter suggests.

Here's the latest Clinton pitch:

Dear Friends,

I hope you will consider joining us for this breakfast with President Clinton on behalf of Senator Clinton's campaign for the presidency. Those of you who have been able to support the Senator early and max out are invited as guests as part of the early max out program. If you have not maxed out and would like to join us, the suggested contribution is $1,000. This will be a wonderful opportunity to hear from President Clinton about Senator Clinton's accomplishments, campaign and what is at stake in this election.

Senator Clinton's early fundraising prowess is formidable, but the sad reality of the 2008 election is that due to the greatly accelerated primary cycle all of the candidates must raise enormous amounts of money. Now candidates have to travel nationwide, which puts immense pressure on all of them to campaign in more states, organize field operations in...

Obama’s fund raising success is devastating news for the campaign of Mrs. William Jefferson Clinton. Obama has generated enthusiasm and contributions from over 100,000 supporters. Mrs. Clinton, on the other hand, has gotten her money almost exclusively from fat cats and party activists. She can’t hope to bring the country together; over 50% of voters say they would not vote for her under any circumstances. Her negatives dictate one service she could perform that the country would truly appreciate, that would be to go away, get out of the race, please don’t put us through more years of the nation’s most dysfunctional relationship.

The Co-Presidents, together again. One can always hope that her aim improves before she chucks another ashtray across the room.
