Right on McCain: John McCain’s conservative record is excellent
National Review Online ^ | March 1, 2007 | Senator Jon Kyl

Posted on 03/03/2007 6:08:19 PM PST by Norman Bates

I have had the distinct pleasure of serving with Senator John McCain for the last 12 years in the U.S. Senate. Yet just as important to me as our shared years of service is our common respect for the conservative principles that have guided us in representing our state. That is why the characterization of John McCain as something other than a common-sense conservative is disturbing to me. Senator McCain’s detractors overlook his actual voting record of supporting conservative values.

During my time in the Senate with John McCain, we have cast the same vote nearly nine times out of ten. Whether in our efforts against inefficiency and waste in the federal budget, confronting the threat we face from international terrorism, protecting the sanctity of human life, or some other issue, Senator McCain has been loyal to, and a leader for, conservative beliefs.

Senator McCain is well known for his long history of protecting the interests of the American taxpayer. He is without question the best choice for voters opposed to wasteful Washington spending and bloated budgets.

Okay, I'll jump in:

What is McCain professing about the 2nd Amendment? I can buy basically any semi-automatic weapon right now.

What is he specifically proposing about illegal immigration? Many and notable conservative congressman have said that it is impossible to think that we are going to bus 10-20 million illegal mexicans down to tijuana to re-process through the turnstile. So what is suppose to happen? And with that, if the argument is, "I dont care, get them out, they are illegal," then obviously you don't understand what is currently driving a large part of the nation's economy in regard to new housing construction, amongst other things. Is McCain suggesting that every illegal go to his local city hall and declare they are illegal to track them? And then after a certain period, they are good to go?

And Rudy Guiliiani? Don't get me started on that mess walking in a NY suit. Sure, he had his moment and America is appreciative. But faaaaaaaaaaaaaade away. How can anyone vote for a three-time, adulterous man, whose own kids don't want to help him campaign, because they have to play golf? (hey, this is politics). The only reason I think that maybe most republicans can support Rudy is that they have had their own adulterous affairs and seek personal validation that they aren't so bad, and the lingering 9/11 image of his honor. Republicans ought to shoot a little higher in supporting candidates.

As for McCain, well the jury is still out for me. His comment on "wasted lives" of American soldiers in Iraq truly pissed me off.

If Duncan Hunter or Mitt expects to be contenders in this race, they better get their money act together quickly.

character to lead

I don't think the Keating 5 is about character. I don't think opposition to free speech, an incumbent protection act, is character. I don't think actually lying about Pres Bush here in Cincinnati during the last election is character. I don't think undercutting conservatives at every step while pretending to be one is character.

I stand with Jim Dobson.

John McCain will not get my vote in the primary. Other candidates have the hope of getting my vote in the general election. That is not the case with John McCain.

If he's the choice, I'll write in the name of the man I voted for in the primary. That will show my support for conservatism, but my rejection, specifically, of John McCain.

Ah, but when you combine his age with his temperment. Neither Dole nor Reagan were angry men.

McCain would make a smart move to pick someone like Romney, Brownback, Huckabee, or even Giuliani.

If McCain were smart, pigs would fly. Politics, these days, isn't about smart, shrewd, or anything else; least of all getting people who actually want to represent and/or work for the people of the United States.

Today, politics is about power, money, greed, and agendas. The American people and the best things for the United States aren't even on these people's radar screens. While my comment about Kyl fishing for a VP spot was facetious, it wouldn't surprise me if that were what he was doing. The political landscape is being changed and re-written before our eyes and I am reaching the point where very little surprises me anymore about politicians. Granted, based on the previous models used to assemble Pres and VP candidates, a McVain and Kyl ticket would be unthinkable.

But the tide is/has been changing and such a potential ticket wouldn't surprise me. McVain needs his ego stroked regularly and Kyl's article reflected the most extreme brown nosing and sucking up that I have seen in quite some time. IOW, Kyl's sucking up is exactly what MCvain needs on a daily basis.

If not a VP slot, then Kyl definitely sounds like he is seeking a senior cabinet post from a guy at the bottom of the candidate list who has less chance of getting the nomination than Britaney has of getting her marbles back at rehab.

McCain is running on a strong conservative platform, has the experience to be President and Commander in Chief, and is a good man.

With the exception of the "strong conservative platform" thing, people have said the same things about Teddy Chappaquiddick and Hillary.

However, none of those points are compelling enough to ever make me ignore McCain's horrible record in the senate to vote for him. Plus, besides being a walking temper tantrum, his age IS a factor, whether you want to believe it or not.

Live by your tagline.

LOL. I don't expect you to remember what I have previously posted, so to refresh the record here it is again.

I have great respect for the military McCain. Politically, I consider him a snake. Nonetheless, I will vote for whomever the GOP nominates--even if that means McCain.

Hence the tagline.

John McCain is good enough on the issues, but he's a media whore. I would support him in the general election only reluctantly.

Abortion is no longer the defining issue of conservativism. No President has the power to change that law and you cannot trust McCain to appoint the kind of judges that would change the law. As a matter of fact, I don't think that you can trust McCain on anything, McCain-Feingold proved that.

Kyl is supporting him because he is from the same state. Kyl is supporting him because Kyl kept his job last year when Arizona re-elected a very popular dem governor and lost two US house seats to the dems. Kyl owes his re-election solely to McCain.

"Kyl owes his re-election solely to McCain."

Well .. McCain didn't win the AZ straw poll so I don't see how he had that much influence FOR Kyl.

But then .. I don't live in AZ so you may know a lot more than I do.
