Right on McCain: John McCain’s conservative record is excellent
National Review Online ^ | March 1, 2007 | Senator Jon Kyl

Posted on 03/03/2007 6:08:19 PM PST by Norman Bates

I have had the distinct pleasure of serving with Senator John McCain for the last 12 years in the U.S. Senate. Yet just as important to me as our shared years of service is our common respect for the conservative principles that have guided us in representing our state. That is why the characterization of John McCain as something other than a common-sense conservative is disturbing to me. Senator McCain’s detractors overlook his actual voting record of supporting conservative values.

During my time in the Senate with John McCain, we have cast the same vote nearly nine times out of ten. Whether in our efforts against inefficiency and waste in the federal budget, confronting the threat we face from international terrorism, protecting the sanctity of human life, or some other issue, Senator McCain has been loyal to, and a leader for, conservative beliefs.

Senator McCain is well known for his long history of protecting the interests of the American taxpayer. He is without question the best choice for voters opposed to wasteful Washington spending and bloated budgets.

This is a couple days old but hasn't been posted. Senator Kyl is a bona-fide conservative and he is completely right here.

On the ever-important issue of life, Senator McCain has a record of voting for pro-life legislation: He has voted for bans on partial birth abortion; he has supported the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act” and parental notification for minors; and he has voted against using federal money to distribute morning-after contraception in schools.

The defining issue for any candidate who seeks the presidency next year will be that person’s vision for conducting the war against terrorists and our mission in Iraq; there is no one stronger on this issue, or with more credibility, than John McCain.

McCain has been on the move leftward for a long time. Plus he despises the First Amendment and will turn on dime if it will get him on television. Plus he seems to have a real anger problem.

I'd vote for Kyl before I'd vote for McCain. Fortunately, I won't have to vote for either. McCain is dead in the water.

McCain is a conservative like Hillary is a moderate.

Sorry .. McCain-Feingold - took away freedom of speech.

The "gang of 14" took away the Senate's ability to get a simple majority for outstanding judicial nominees.

Now .. because of such foolishness .. the senate is out of power .. thanks John!! The Kennedy camp loves you.

And .. John's latest SECRET meetings with Kennedy to write some "immigration" bill is the frosting on the cake.

McCain has lost his conservative message and sided with the democrats. How Kyl can support him is beyond me!

He would at least raise the level of debate. At this early date, anything is possible. I really don't know enough about him yet.

I think that McCain's greatest liability with conservatives is that he has gained the greatest part of his notoriety in recent years from a media who was always glad to give the man they called a 'maverick' some airtime, because he was usually splitting with his party, his President, or their policies. Why else do you think the media had (up until recently) such a love for McCain?

McCain is moving in the right direction and his victory in the SC Spartanburg straw poll shows that he resonates with mainstream conservatives.

Senator McCain has been loyal to, and a leader for, conservative beliefs.

Not on immigration, McCain-Feingold, and the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) gives him a 91% rating on protecting small business. Not bad, but could be better.

Sorry, still don't like McCain. He'd get my vote in the general, but not in the primary.

Perhaps Senator Kyl would like to run?

McCain's age is against him. His temperment is against him. That's just for starters. I don't believe he'll be the Repub candidate, and I wouldn't vote for him. But if he were to get that far, I would have to vote for him over anyone the Democrats put forth.

Showing McQueeg with Reagn does not mean McQueeg is a conservative, it only means he got lucky to be in the photograph.

It has been said of the French that they are there for us (America) when they need us.

The same applies to McCain vis a vis conservatives: He is there for conservatives when he needs them.
