In total 87% of Britons have difficulty remembering everyday things, while a third of women admitted forgetting where they have put things and 30% of men struggled to remember people's names.
The results are part of Alzheimer's Society's Million Memories campaign which includes a website - www.millionmemories.org.uk - to help store people's memories and raise awareness of memory loss.
Remembering where they put things was a problem for 42% of 16-24 year olds compared to 23% of the over 65s.
Alzheimer's Society chief executive Neil Hunt said: "Memory lapses happen to everyone from time to time, but if your forgetfulness is getting worse or is starting to affect your everyday life it is best to get it checked out."
Celebrities including Britt Ekland, Jo Brand, Lynda Bellingham, Sally Lindsay and Graham Norton are backing the campaign which coincides with World Alzheimer's Day on September 21.
Former world memory champ Ben Pridmore suggested: "If you want to improve your memory then a top tip is to think in pictures, your brain processes pictures more easily than words.
"It is hard to imagine how devastating it must be to be affected by a disease like Alzheimer's, which robs people of their memories."

Chief among their memories lost is the forgotten taste of freedom. And America is fast forgetting it too. Cant even have a .22 cal gun or hunt foxes anymore in not-so-jolly England. And how about them taxes and socialized medicine?

I went to college for a semester at the Univ of London in the 1970s. I was shocked when I went to the student cafeteria and found that one could buy beer! Not only could one buy it, but there were plenty of people drinking it - in the middle of the day!

Maybe those Big brother camera's are also emanating mind control to lull the masses into forgetfulness, it seems most of forgotten WWII and the Nazi invasion.

In the mid-60's normal pub hours in Liverpool were 12:00 to 3:00 at lunchtime (yes... quaint drinking hours rules)
But the University Student Union cafeteria/bar had to close at 2:00 so students would get to their afternoon classes....:^) No-one left 'til the bar closed...
I was an undergrad at Michigan in the early 70s. I saw all kinds of drug activity going on. I have to admit I was more taken aback by the student drinking in the middle of the day than any drug scene in Ann Arbor.
