Anti-Wal-Mart warriors fueling class warfare

Liberal campaign hurts people who need bargains

Evergreen Park, Ill., a suburb contiguous with Chicago's western edge, is 88 percent white. A large majority of the customers of the Wal-Mart that sits here, less than a block outside Chicago, are from the city, and more than 90 percent of the store's customers are African-American. One of whom, a woman pushing a shopping cart with a stoical 3-year-old along for the ride, has a chip on her shoulder about the size of this 141,000 square-foot Wal-Mart. She applied for a job when the store opened in January and was turned down because, she said, the person doing the hiring "had an attitude."

So why is the woman shopping here anyway? She looks at the questioner as though he is dimwitted and directs his attention to the low prices of the DVDs on the rack next to her.

Sensibly, she compartmentalizes her moods and her money. Besides, she should not brood. She had lots of company in not being hired: More than 25,000 people applied for the 325 openings.

Which vexes liberals like John Kerry. (He and his helpmeet last shopped at Wal-Mart when?) In 2004 he tested what has become one of the Democrats' 2006 themes: Wal-Mart is, he said, "disgraceful"and symbolic of "what's wrong with America."

By now, Democrats have succeeded, to their embarrassment (if they are susceptible to that), in making the basic numbers familiar: The median household income of Wal-Mart shoppers is under $40,000. Wal-Mart, the most prodigious job-creator in the history of the private sector in this galaxy, has almost as many employees (1.3 million) as the U.S. military has uniformed personnel.

A McKinsey company study concluded that Wal-Mart accounted for 13 percent of the nation's productivity gains in the second half of the 1990s, ...

'About 70% of WM employees (and their children) are dependent upon the government for Medicare or Medicaid.'

And were they also dependent upon the government for ALL their needs before they became employees of Wal-Mart?

Not speaking for the DUmmies but where I live we have a fine alternative to stuff from off-Island. Capitalism, as it is practiced in these United States, panders to DUmmies their market. Capitalism, to be a force for good, must include the intelligently greedy in its market, otherwise it is mere commercialism (q. v., W7NCD not some post-modern version dictionary).

Yes, I am. You heard it here first. There are some very good DVDs out there telling the truth. In one of them the CEO is bragging about low wages and putting health care costs on the government. Oh, well, join the other naysayers if you want. I am used to criticism. "Nothing to see here. Time to move on."

There is a Wal-Mart Supercenter around 15 miles from us. The prices are so much lower than the local grocery stores and a wider variety! Their produce and meat departments are excellent too. The folks who work there are friendly and very helpful.Just my experience, of course. I refuse to buy at Target any more than necessary. Their lack of community values and higher prices irk me. :)

I manage to do coupons and specials and rob the local grocery store every week, so traveling to the nearest Wal-Mart for groceries isn't something I do...but in my experience, grocery stores in inner cities are way over-priced and if people can travel to a Wal-Mart and find lower prices, good for them.

That 70 percent is a complete and total fabrication.

They included in the 70 percent uninsured by Wal Mart young people who still were insured by their parents, people who work there as a 2nd job and are insured at their FT job and people who are married and covered by their spouses which covers a high percentage of those uninsured by Wal mart. Also PTers who are ineligible to be insured as they would at 90 percent of companies.

Union stoolie you probably are.

What gets me is the morons who actually think unions want to help Wal Mart workers. NO THEY WANT THEIR DUES!

Around here, the lowest prices for food are found at WinCo. Prices are about 25% cheaper than WM. WinCo is 100% employee owned. The best prices for drugs and general sundries are offered by Bi-Mart (another employee owned store). CostCo and WM are about the same price. Target stores in Oregon are much cleaner and offer a better shopping experience than WM.

You said:
"About 70% of WM employees (and their children) are dependent upon upon government for Medicare or Medicaid."

Got proof for that statement? I think your wrong, and your bias is showing....

But why let a good lie get in the way of bashing a large company right?

Hard to believe the rest of your rant when you can't get your facts straight, huh?

I guess you would be happy when the unions come in and take over walmart huh?

How about this one?

"The truth is that WM's food prices are higher in many cases than other local merchants. "

Got proof for that one too?

I doubt it......

The truth is that WM's food prices are higher in many cases than other local merchants.

WM sells 20% of the groceries sold in the country. The average grocery shopper at WM saves 17% over shopping elsewhere.

Recent study, released in the last week or so. I'll try and find it.

My sister the angry commie HATES WalMart. Never passes up a chance to put them down. But where did she take me shopping when I was visiting her in April? WALMART. And there were other stores there, in Tulsa, OK.

I do not care about national averages. I do care about the prices I see for myself on the shelves. The only thing I have purchased from WM in the past three months was a large container of liquid detergent sold on sale as a special item.

I feel your pain. I also have an angry commie sister. She supports Feingold for president. Feel my pain. Worse than that my parents still think the demorat party is still the party of FDR. They believe that the Bush tax cuts have taken food, medical care and clothing away from the poor.

[Class warfare as every warfare requires two sides. The pressure to lower wages or "cost of labor" in order to increase profits is also a form of class warfare.]

Just like it takes two people to lie; one to lie and the other to listen.

I put myself through college by working at Liberty Glass in Sapulpa Ok. I had to be a member of the union. Glass Bottle Blowers of United States and Canada. That was 1969-1971. It was 106 outside in the summer and 110 inside the plant. YUCK. Paid well.

OK, that's fair enough, we all have to adjust our lives to our local conditions.

What threw me off was you quoting what I assumed to be nation average assertions about the number of WM EEs who needed welfare etc.

Are those numbers unique to your local area, or are they national numbers?
