Anti-Wal-Mart warriors fueling class warfare

Liberal campaign hurts people who need bargains

Evergreen Park, Ill., a suburb contiguous with Chicago's western edge, is 88 percent white. A large majority of the customers of the Wal-Mart that sits here, less than a block outside Chicago, are from the city, and more than 90 percent of the store's customers are African-American. One of whom, a woman pushing a shopping cart with a stoical 3-year-old along for the ride, has a chip on her shoulder about the size of this 141,000 square-foot Wal-Mart. She applied for a job when the store opened in January and was turned down because, she said, the person doing the hiring "had an attitude."

So why is the woman shopping here anyway? She looks at the questioner as though he is dimwitted and directs his attention to the low prices of the DVDs on the rack next to her.

Sensibly, she compartmentalizes her moods and her money. Besides, she should not brood. She had lots of company in not being hired: More than 25,000 people applied for the 325 openings.

Which vexes liberals like John Kerry. (He and his helpmeet last shopped at Wal-Mart when?) In 2004 he tested what has become one of the Democrats' 2006 themes: Wal-Mart is, he said, "disgraceful"and symbolic of "what's wrong with America."

By now, Democrats have succeeded, to their embarrassment (if they are susceptible to that), in making the basic numbers familiar: The median household income of Wal-Mart shoppers is under $40,000. Wal-Mart, the most prodigious job-creator in the history of the private sector in this galaxy, has almost as many employees (1.3 million) as the U.S. military has uniformed personnel.

A McKinsey company study concluded that Wal-Mart accounted for 13 percent of the nation's productivity gains in the second half of the 1990s, ...

Low prices, but always to packed to grocery shop. We grocery shop at Kroger or Schnucks instead.

The DUcraps cannot run on issues so they run against capitalism. Wal Mart isn't perfect but what is the DUthug's alternative. They never give any.

The fight over WalMarts seems to be a matter of wealthy folks trying to pull down the preferred merchant of the less affluent people. LET THEM SHOP AT TIFFANY'S!

Kerry: Voters now more receptive to his message

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry said at the outset of a trip to Iowa today that the nation’s voters are more open now than two years ago to the message he campaigned on as the 2004 Democratic nominee for president.

Although a decision about whether he will mount a second bid for the White House is “down the road,” conditions in the country have worsened since his narrow loss to President Bush, he said in a telephone interview.

“I think the American people can understand I lost to a lie about Iraq and lie about me personally,” Kerry said while en route to Iowa. “I think people will say, Kerry was right about the war, he was right about health care, he was right about energy policy.

“I think people wouldn’t mind having a president who knows how to get it right,” he added.

Kerry planned to headline a state legislative fundraiser in Indianola this evening before attending events Saturday in Iowa City, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids.

The trip is his fifth since the 2004 election to Iowa, which is scheduled to kick off the 2008 presidential nominating campaign.

Since the 2004 election, Kerry has remained a vocal critic of the Bush administration, especially regarding its handling of the war in Iraq. In July, he co-sponsored a bill with Democrat Russ Feingold of Wisconsin that called for U.S. troops to be out of Iraq by next summer. The bill was soundly defeated.

Last week, Kerry gave a speech in Boston laying out a plan for U.S. security. It centered on pulling troops out of Iraq and redeploying some to Afghanistan where, he says, the threat posed by terrorists is greater.

“Iraq is not the center of the war on terror,” he said Friday. “Afghanistan is in greater trouble today and we ought to be redeploying our forces in a way that helps us properly fight this war.”

Republicans in Iowa, where Kerry lost in 2004, characterized the criticisms as “inaccurate.”

“Iowans re-elected President Bush because they have confidence that he will do what is necessary to maintain the safety and security of our country,” said Sarah Sauber, spokeswoman for the Republican Party of Iowa.

'Mason City Democrat John Stone said Kerry would have won, but for attacks by a group of veterans who ran ads attacking his record as a Naval officer in Vietnam and his criticism of the war afterward.

Class warfare as every warfare requires two sides. The pressure to lower wages or "cost of labor" in order to increase profits is also a form of class warfare.

Wal-Mart's marketing is based on the public perception that it's prices are less than other retail stores. Quality is not pushed by Wally World as a marketing concept. The truth is that WM's food prices are higher in many cases than other local merchants. Bargain shoppers, if they are astute, will soon learn other merchants offer a more pleasant shopping experience with lower prices. For example, Target stores, often have lower prices and a better environment. Wal-Mart is getting a lot of bad publicity today because of very low wages. But people are more incensed by the company's attitude about health benefits. About 70% of WM employees (and their children) are dependent upon upon government for Medicare or Medicaid.

Can Wal-Mart and our trade-deficit with China be traced to the Ozark Caligula administration's decision to allow our satellites to head up in space via China rockets(Lorel)? As an adolescent in the 70's and 80's, I never heard of Wal-Mart until the 90's. It was always K-Mart, etc. I personally don't shop at Wal-Mart.
