Exclusive Poll Results Show Allen Losing Ground

GOP Allen's Once Large Lead Evaporates: In an election for the United States Senate in Virginia today, 8/21/06, incumbent Republican George Allen edges Democrat challenger James Webb 48% to 45%, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll conducted for W*USA-TV in Washington, DC.

Since an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6/28/06, Allen has lost 8 points and Webb has gained 8 points. Allen's lead has shrunk from 19 points to 3 points.

Interviewing for this poll began 8/18/06, one week after Allen singled out a Webb campaign worker at an Allen rally. Allen has lost support across all demographic groups, but in particular, among younger voters. He has gone from Plus 23 to Minus 17, a swing of 40 points. In Southeastern VA, Allen has gone from a 2:1 lead to a tie, a 31-point swing.

"It's August, and posters getting all excited about the downfall of Allen is very premature."

When two polls taken within a few days of each other both show almost identical results I tend to take them seriously. The fact is that both Rasmussen and Survey USA are highly accurate, reliable polling companies. I don't think Allen will lose, but he can't make another gaffe like this. This race was his to lose, and now it's going to be quite close (probably about a 5-7 point margin). While we will keep the seat, VA will now draw valuable resources out of places where they are more needed, like MO, NJ, MT, WA, etc...

It was his age and his increasingly bizarre and inexplicable behavior. According to Wikipedia he likened the Democrat's appearance to Uday and Qusay. He also accused his opponent of beating up his wife and making her "black and blue". The kicker was the debate, though.

"[Bunning] could not appear in person due to an important vote held just few hours before the debate and instead was televised from the Republican national headquarters; he refused to allow an independent observer in the room with him; he insisted that no portion of any recording of his performance could be rebroadcast; he insisted that the debate be broadcast live in the afternoon instead of the customary prime time hours; and other conditions. After the debate it was leaked that Bunning was using a telepromter to read previously crafter answers to the questions posed to him during the debate (upon insisting that he receive the questions ahead of time)." - Wikipedia

He ended up winning by one percent after leading by 15-20 points throughout the summer. People have a short memory here and they refuse to believe that history can repeat itself.

Im not trying to deduce why the man said what he did. Im just saying its in poor taste. I dont think Allen is a racist, just he should have known better than to give something his opposition can jump on like this..

Okay, fine. You don't really have it in for George Allen.

In your words... whatever!

Look, I really do view this nonsense in a positive light for a couple of reasons:

1) It shakes some of the groupies off of the "Allen in '08" bandwagon. Perhaps we can actually make it through the '06 elections before seeing another thread on that (dream on, I know).
2) These manipulated polls may well cause the media to focus more attention on this race, thereby diverting money and resources into this state and away from more competitive seats. Allen hasn't lost any support among Pubbies, he's got a huge warchest, and he hasn't even started to fight.
3) Psychotic Jim Webb still has 2.5 months left for more public hissy fits and maybe even a full meltdown. The chance of that is only going to increase if he's feeling pumped up about his chances. :-)

Im just saying that Allen made a very very poor move when he used that word.

And I'm saying "No, he didn't." If Allen had called the guy "Skippy" the little wuss ([gasp] is that racist?!?) would still have been whining and wailing that mean ol' George Allen picked on l'il ol' him 'cause he was the only "person of color" in the crowd.

Could him being addressed have had anything to do with the video camera glued to his head, or the fact that everyone in the room knew he was with Webb's campaign? Naaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Had to be a race thing. Because that's basically all the Dems have.

So you're seriously worried about two August polls showing Allen winning comfortably, combined with his staggering warchest in a GOP-friendly state? LOL. I'm more worried about the world ending today when I've yet to make love to Anna Kournikova!

You're likely correct there, but it's going to draw DEM resources, not GOP resources.

People have a short memory here and they refuse to believe that history can repeat itself.

Actually, our memories are incredibly good. We see this garbage every election cycle. Perhaps that's why most of us who have been around here a while aren't launching into "Chicken Little" mode (which some have been in since last year).

Hey, while we're all freakin' out about polls, can anyone detect a trend in the latest Gallup generic Congressional candidate poll? :-D

Registered Voters     Democratic candidate Republican candidate Undecided/ other
2006 Aug 18-20 47 45 7
2006 Aug 7-10 50 41 9
2006 Jul 28-30 51 40 8
2006 Jul 6-9 51 41 9
2006 Jun 23-25 54 38 7

Sorry, but that can't all be explained away by the London airline plot "bump." ROTFL!! (For those who don't follow these things closely, a baseline is the Dem is generally 5-7 points ahead in the generic polls. Here the latest margin is down to two points. I report, you decide.)

Forgot to add, note that there's been no statistical change in the Undecided category. The statistically significant shift of about 7 points came straight out of the Dems' hides and then over to the Pubbies.

I don't believe this garbage from MSN, but I still don't understand why Senator Allen needs a noose in his office. What is the reason for this? The yearbook photo whatever, the name calling whatever, the stickers on his car whatever, but a noose?????? I don't get it but if someone could explain it too me I would appreciate it.

By the way, while I'm no politician (by a longshot!), I have a noose in my office. Saddam Hussein is hanging in effigy. :-)

He doesn't have a noose in his office. He had one in his law offices years ago. It was a reference to the justice of the old west. Nothing more.

So George favors hanging horse thieves and people who haven't had a fair trial?

What on Earth does Bunning's situation have to do with Allen? Allen's weathered a bad week and will still win.
