Arrests Bolster G.O.P. Bid to Claim Security as Issue

Republicans seized on the arrests of terrorism suspects in Britain yesterday to bolster a White House campaign to turn national security issues to their advantage this fall, arguing that the nation needs tough Republican policies to protect Americans from threats from abroad.

Officials in both parties said they viewed the arrests as critical in determining how they would approach the fall campaign, with Republicans saying it could be a turning point in a year in which they have been on the defensive over the war in Iraq and other issues.

The developments played neatly into the White House-led effort, after Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, lost on Tuesday to an antiwar primary challenger, to remind voters of the threats facing the nation and to cast Democrats as timid on national defense.

The arrests were announced less than 24 hours after Vice President Dick Cheney and other Republican officials suggested that Mr. Lieberman’s defeat reflected the world view of a Democratic Party that was not prepared to lead the nation in such dangerous times.

Mr. Cheney, who a spokesman said had been kept abreast of the investigation, suggested in his remarks Wednesday that the outcome of a Democratic primary in Connecticut could embolden “Al Qaeda types.”

Republicans, facing tough midterm elections — and with a history, as Democrats noted, of spotlighting terrorist threats in election seasons — used the news from England to try to pound home their message that they were doing everything possible to keep the nation safe. Mr. Bush strode off Air Force One to television cameras to declare that the United States was safer from terrorist attacks than it was before Sept. 11, 2001, but remained in danger.

You can bet that if the terrorists' attack had been successful that the NYT et al and the 'Rats would have beaten the issue over the head of the GOP like a pinata!

You can bet also that if the NYTimes had gotten wind of the investigation, they would have found a way to thwart it's end.

Really too bad this broke just now. It is complete overshadowing the arrest of 3 Terrorists in Tennessee this week buying up Trac phones. Gee I sure bet the NY Slimes are glad THAT story, that shows the Time's Treason in publishing the NSA story, is directly helping the terrorists got drown out by this story from Great Britain.

this plot was obviously part of Rove's planning to keep the House and Senate in November...we will eventually learn that the suspects are Republican operatives from NH and Wyoming named Sean and Joseph, and they pull these things off just to provide Cheney with opportunitys to shove the security issues down the American public's throat.

Happened too early. Lazy days of August. Not as good as October. Now that would have given us 10 seats in the Senate and 15 or so in the House.

Next the NYT is going to write a story how Ahkmed-SCHMachmed in Iran is doing his little Aug. 22 dance to HELP the GOP!!! If you ask the Times, EVERYTHING revolves around the Rove/Bush/Cheney Master Puppeteers! If the NYT turned half it's talent towards doing investigations that actually HELPED America, it would truly be a miracle. Although at this point, so few would believe them. What a lost cause.

OTH, Maybe Pinch is the 12th Mahdi!

Democratic Party will never be prepared to lead the nation in such dangerous times, heck, they root for the terrorists. Democratic Party have no constructive solutions and no policy agenda other than to support Michael Moore and his rabid conspiracy theories.

These lefties are completely paranoid. If that were the issue here, Rove would have waited until October. August is too early -- we know how quickly Americans forget.

There must be a full moon. The moonbats are out in full force.
Republicans ... with a history, as Democrats noted, of spotlighting terrorist threats in election seasons —...

Dam You Karl Rove!!
(he must be in cahoots with Al Queda (hahaha))

“The war in Iraq had nothing to do with the war against international terrorism, or very little to do with the war on terrorism,” said James Webb ... “It has distracted our attention, it has pulled our forces in, and we are now in a situation where we have 135,000 on the ground, which affects our ability to do a lot of things that we would be able to do otherwise.”

Uh.... okay. Like what and how 'mr' Webb??? Should we use these 135,000 troops to invade Iran, the Gaza Strip, Syria and Lebanon - then in our spare time -- North Korea? Or use them to patrol our cities rounding up 'terrorists'? (dam the Constitution, full speed ahead!)

What's that? No? They have 'rights' Oh.. okay. I got ya (I think?!?!?) /s

“The issue is going to be discussed in the fall,” this official said. “Are you saying if the Democrats talk about the war, we shouldn't? We will talk about the war, and we will talk about the consequences of the policies advocated by the Democrats.”

There you go again, you mean republican. How dare you question their patriotism!

Prozac sales and suicide hot-line calls are going to sky rocket in October :-)
