Internet Gambling Ban Part of Broader "War on Immorality"

(Washington, DC) As part of House Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) agenda to force Americans to abide with his moral beliefs, Congress is now trying to outlaw Internet gambling. Hastert listed the prohibition of Internet gambling in his recently announced American Values Agenda. The House of Representatives already passed H.R. 4411, The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. This attempt to cut off Internet gambling by Americans bans financial payments to offshore casinos. The Senate will be tackling this issue after it returns from its August recess. The House version of the bill passed by a vote of 317-93. Should the Senate pass (the same general version of) the bill, it would force U.S. financial institutions to cut off payments to the thousands of popular online gambling institutions legally located outside of U.S. boundaries. The bill won't impact state sponsored gambling, such as lotteries and horse racing. "States have always had the right to approve and regulate gambling within their borders," according to the bill's sponsor Bob Goodlatte (R-VA). "This bill makes Internet gambling illegal except where regulated by the states."

This legislation coincides with the 22-count indictment against eleven people and four corporations for Internet gambling related charges. Among those charged with racketeering, conspiracy and fraud were Gary Kaplan and David Carruthers of BetonSports.com.

Additionally, the World Trade Organization has been asked to settle disputes between the country of Antigua and Barbuda and the U.S. over recent prohibitions to online gambling. According to Antiguan authorities, the U.S. has taken no measures to comply with the recommendations and rulings of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body on the issue.

"It's clear that Hastert and Goodlatte are trying to force their moral views on the entire country. Hastert's already added a gay marriage ban to his agenda," said Stephen Gordon, the Libertarian Party's communication director. "Hopefully, they don't plan to impose blue laws or prohibit alcohol, pre-marital sex and dancing, too."

The Libertarian Party has a 35 year commitment to keeping government out of people's wallets as well as their bedrooms. According to Gordon, this latest move by Congress violates both of these general standards.

It wouldnt suprise me if they did and it wouldnt suprise me if a majority of the freepers supported those laws. Most republicans love the nanny state socialists as much as the democrats if not more.

Five years for gambling online. We live in a police state. Child molesters don't even get that kind of time.

This whole thing with online gambling is about taxation, baby.

Think about it--there ARE people who win at gambling (especially sports gambling) and yet that money they get is coming back to them tax free. Now, what to do about that?
And what to do about our Indian casino lobbying groups and 'downtown revitalization' efforts (wherever that town may be?)

Ban internet gambling. Morons. Tyrants.

Online gambling prohibitions are just a way for the government to eliminate competition and beef up government sponsored gambling.

My plan was to deny this and to show you proof how you are totally off base.....

I couldn't come up with enough examples of how you are wrong.....

They love the government revenue and the lobbying money even more - this is all about protecting Indian and Vegas casinos, state-sanctioned horse racing, and state lotteries.

This is the worst kind of legislation - done simply to maintain certain revenue streams.

I thought the "ban" on internet gambling using credit cards was a good thing. Using unsecured loans to pay for gambling, hurts consumers.

It's also about protecting state-run gambling, aka the state lottery.

About the only kind of gambling it doesn't go after, is the kind you do when you eat cheap Mexican food.

So, the federal government interfering with commerce is a good thing, even though clearly unconstitutional.

Most financial institutions no longer process transactions with gambling sites anyway, because they were having a lot of fraud, chargebacks, and trouble getting paid. I have no problem with that - any business is free to do what it wants.

However, our nanny state is now going to require all financial institutions to not conduct transactions with these sites. I didn't know it was the role of our financial institutions or government to protect us from ourselves.

There is the "Paypal of Gambling" site called Neteller, which basically works the same as Paypal in that you fund it with your bank account and can transfer your money to/from other people or gambling sites. I have used this site for three years playing poker online (disclosure - I have won a small sum and have paid taxes on it). To deposit to a gambling site, you usually have to have the funds on hand to play. Therefore there is little credit risk to someone processing this transaction. If my bank chooses to no longer take EFTs to/from Neteller, that is their right, but I don't think the feds should dictate that to anyone.

As already mentioned, I am sure half of FR will be happy more of our rights are being taken away, because they are against online gambling. That is a shame.

No, federal government interference with commerce IS a bad thing. However, this type of "commerce" smells.
People defaulting on credit card debt causes MY cards to become more expensive (if I ever choose to carry a balance). If they only had "cash and carry" gambling, no one (except compulsive gamblers, I guess) would get hurt.

Just this line from the article should tell you something-
"Additionally, the World Trade Organization has been asked to settle disputes between the country of Antigua and Barbuda and the U.S. over recent prohibitions to online gambling. According to Antiguan authorities, the U.S. has taken no measures to comply with the recommendations and rulings of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body on the issue."

Nanny State Ping

Sadly you are correct, freepatriot32. Daily, I come closer and closer to joining my husband as a Libertarian.

The so-called conservatives on this site who embrace and welcome the nanny-state are starting to truly scare me.

Have you ever heard of personal responsibility????????

It is none of your business, or that of the government, what I do with my money. If I am an idiot and wish to waste my paycheck on gambling what's it to you?

Keep the nannies away from the net. It's one of the few places where freedom REALLY exists, and not just the lip-service freedom we hear about from statist politicians in an election year.
