MEMO TO FOX: Juan needs to take the same route as Julian Phillips.

Actually, I disagree.  So long as Brit is around to provide the smackdowns I enjoy listening to Juan's verbal train wrecks.

A few years ago we were getting set to negotiate a big contract with one of our suppliers.  I'm talking large 8 figures annually.  I could not stand the account executive and I went into the beginning of the negotiations with replacing him as one of my goals.  Very shortly it dawned on me that I really didn't want him replaced.  So long as he was our account exec I really didn't mind screwing them in the negotiations.  If I liked my opposite number I'd feel bad about that sort of thing.  Not exactly conducive to good negotiations.

#284, great thought that previous period did usher in the 6 Day War....Which made a huge difference for quite a while.

IMHO Israel showed that they truly wanted a long lasting peace, they even gave up the Gaza strip, a huge error in hindsight, but when the terrorists would not let up and troops were kidnapped Israel went into action. Fair is fair.

I would remind you that both WWI and WWII were going on long before the US got serious about those conflicts too.

I think there are a large number of 9-11-01 survivors who are going to be awfully surprised to learn the War has not reached our shores yet. I also am pretty sure that a rather large number of US Military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, and various other places in the world, are going to be very very surprised to learn they are not at war yet.

I think the Taliban would beg to differ.

The Taliban were the recognized government of Afghanistan, hence a state actor. They suffered the consequences of harboring AQ, which had physically located there and organized training camps. We knew who took down the WTC and where they were located.

Who would we retaliate against if a Panama-flagged vessel pulled into NY harbor and detonated an atomic bomb? Or a bomb was detonated in a truck inside the US? That is the problem when dealing with state sponsors of terrorism who use surrogates to carry out their attacks. The Chinese could do something like that as well.

Frankly my heart is with Newt and strongly wishes for us to strip off the gloves, throw down with the Israelis now and simply put an end to these scum. However my brain understands the difference between what is desirable and what is doable.

Agree, doing that would be counterproductive to our efforts in the region, including in Iraq.

#322, I am not so sure that any Democrat unless it is Zell Miller would get the lean forward, hunchback, in your face Russert approach to questioning guests.

many of us to realize that we are in WWIV, but not a critical mass IMHO

Most of you think the rich don't pay their fair share of taxes and that Campaign Fiance Reform was a good idea. Bad ideas, no matter how wildly popular, are still bad ideas. That is one of the reason we are a Constitutional Republic not a Direct Democracy

I heard Chris Wallace tell Brian Wilson yesterday..that after today, he will be on vacation for 2 weeks...

I am not sure how I feel about that...if they put Brit as the host..he isn't as effective as a slap down on Juan.

The Taliban did not attack us, Al Qeda did. How would that be any different then the Iranians using Hezbullah to attack us?

Actually, I am serious

Except for modern weaponry, the North Koreans and Iranians can't compare with the professionalism and effectiveness of the Nazis and Japanese. They had the ability to project power with superior logistics and military expertise.

It is the modern weaponry that I'm mostly referring to, but don't think that these people are primatives or cave dwellers.  There are some excellent and well trained folks in both militaries.  Fifty years ago and with considerably less military capability the North Koreans (with Chinese help) managed to fight us to a stand still.  A lot of the difference is will.  If they launch a war there will be no half measures.  If they have a weapon they'll use it, screw the consequences.  Same with the Iranians and a big segement of our other enemies.  The Wehrmacht was one of the most capable and professional fighting forces ever put in the field.  They were also some of the most vicious and ruthless combatants of the era, but the relatively primative Russians defeated them (with big help from nature).

The issue is not "can they win?"  The issue is can they inflict unacceptable levels of damage if we don't pay attention and respond properly and in a timely manner?

Numbers are meaningless as Saddam proved. The Iranians could only achieve a stalemate with Iraq after 8 years of fighting. The Iranians would fold like a cheap suit when faced with a real military force like the US or the Israelis for that matter. To compare these ragtag armies with the Nazis and Japanese is laughable.

Numbers are not meaningless, unless you are assuming that they are facing us directly and that there's nothing else occupying our forces.  And they did fight Iraq to a draw for eight years.  Imagine what they can do to Yemen or Saudi Arabia if they set out to?

And if you don't think the current Iranian or North Korean military with their current weapons could wipe out the Imperial Japanese or German armies of World War 2 in hours then your smoking something.  I'm measuring their ability to inflict damage on relatively undefended opponents.  The current axis of evil has the WW2 axis powers beat all to hell.  Even their ability to inflict damage on us with our modern capabilities is nothing to ignore.  They would have a short and very violoent experience on the battlefield, no doubt about that, but at what cost to our forces or our society, if they were able to choose the battlefield?  And don't forget that they may have nukes.

As to the rest, you just don't see the same world that I do and are not willing to consider other possibilities.  Is it likely that it will play out as I have suggested or Newt has implied?  Probably not.  Is it possible?  Absolutely.  Any other conclusion is a "failure of imagination."
