Ex-British rocker loses Vietnam child sex appeal

HO CHI MINH CITY (Reuters) - A court in Vietnam on Thursday turned down an appeal by former British rock star Gary Glitter against child molestation charges and ordered him to serve a three-year jail sentence and deportation.

An appeals court judge in the People's Supreme Court of communist-run Vietnam announced the decision in Ho Chi Minh City after a one-day hearing that was closed to the public and the media.

Under Vietnam law, Glitter, 62, may petition the president of the Supreme Court to review the charges and sentence again, a court official said.

Glitter, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hit songs and a bouffant hairstyle, was calm throughout the 40-minute reading of the decision, but shouted his displeasure after the court was dismissed.

"No justice here in Vietnam," Glitter screamed as he was escorted to a green van that returned him to prison in the southern resort town of Vung Tau about 120 km (75 miles) from Ho Chi Minh City. "They did not listen to the defense at all."

Glitter, a stage name, was charged and convicted in Vietnam under his real name Paul Francis Gadd on March 3 in a one-day closed trial. He was found guilty of kissing, fondling and having sex with two 11-year-old girls in Vung Tau.

"No justice here in Vietnam," Glitter screamed

Yeah, 3 years is not justice.
20 years at hard labor, castration, and a flogging... THAT is justice.

Although, I'd imagine 3 years in a Vietnam prison is like 20 in a prison here, and may well be the end of Mr. Glitter.

I have no love for Communists or Vietnam. But if he's a child molester - let him rot.

I've got zero respect for commies. Then again, no one made him go have sex with underage children. That's just what we call too bad. If he doesn't like prison, he could've exercised a bit more restraint.

The Post was a tad too solicitous of Mr. Gliter's plight. Had to wait until the end of the story to discover that he "paid compensation".

If it were up to the "posties", their little pedophile buddies would be swarming the streets of Washington DC.

If I'm not mistaken, early stories said he could have faced death in Vietnam itself.

I think he can expect the prison will not be serving him high tea every afternoon. :)

he was convicted of child pornography and sex with a 14 year old (acquitted of that charge, actually) in 1999, and got out in 2000, moved to Cuba immediately, then to Cambodia, got deported on suspicion of child molestation, moved to Vietnam, and well, you know the rest now.

Is he ex-British or ex-rocker? Is he ex-both? Mr. Glitter appears to be either a man without a country or a born again Barry Manilow fan.
