We need another Jimmy Carter for president
WSU Daily Evergreen ^ | Monday, June 5, 2006 | AMELIA VENEZIANO

Posted on 06/05/2006 12:28:01 PM PDT by presidio9

The longest day of my short life occurred a week and a half ago. At some point while I slept in Pullman, the sun rose Thursday morning. That evening, I watched the gray sky fade from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle. On the road back to Pullman, the early morning rays lit up the sky again on the hill down into Washtucna. It was a long road trip.

What was the purpose of this borderline insane trip? Former President Jimmy Carter, of course.

Eighteen members of the WSU Young Democrats had an important meeting with the man who is, arguably, the last honorable president in recent memory — and by recent, I mean since the 1960’s. Carter was clean, moral and honest. He worked hard to restore the presidency to its former glory. Though he served just four years, he successfully turned the nation around. His Baptist faith was a main part of his administration, but he didn’t use it to minimalize anyone else.

In this day and age of government corruption and executive powers running rampant, we need a new Carter.

After a highly corrupt Nixon administration — when Nixon was nearly impeached and resigned instead — Carter was voted into office. The people thought this Democrat might help clean up the shattered remnants of the nation after the corrupt Republicans destroyed our faith in the Presidency and executive branch.

Carter wasn’t the best president in history, or even in his century. But he was damn good; cleaned up the Oval Office and all its decay, implemented amazing new policies and was a leader in environmental protection.

This Georgian was the son of a peanut farmer — his daddy wasn’t no president — who worked his way up from the bottom, went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, and was always faithful to his faith and upbringing.

So we have a Christian, naval academy graduate who served his nation in the military. And he’s a Democrat.

President George W. Bush and the Republicans have managed to twist the nation to think that the only patriots and the only Christians are in the red states, and everyone else is an atheist terrorist sympathizer.

We need another Jimmy Carter. This nation needs another man of truly high morals — not just God-talk, which Bush has mastered, but the real moral and ethical codes of a truly Christian man (though being Christian is hardly a requirement for President) willing to fix the last eight years.

This nation has been through the meat grinder. We’ve gone to pre-emptive war, lost thousands in terrorist attacks early on and thousands more overseas. The environment has taken a beating from those individuals greedy to make a profit, civil rights have been sent back decades by the Patriot Act and Supreme Court nominations, and the surplus Bill Clinton left us six long years ago has ben replaced by a record deficit.

Shaking Jimmy Carter’s hand was a high point in my life. It ranks up there — higher, perhaps, than my handshakes with Al Gore and Clinton. Carter was honorable, honest, and knew real, hard work.

The nation needs a leader. We need someone strong, independent and ready to clean up the corruption. We need another man (or woman) like Jimmy Carter — resilient and capable of handling a mess, who didn’t get into office through nepotism and oil fields, who can fix America.

When we find that candidate, sign me up to campaign. I’ll sell my soul to get someone capable into the White House and heal this great nation.

Liberals live in an "artistic fantasy land". Let everyone else worry about real life.

The imbecility is record setting.

Carter is very popular with people who weren't alive when he was President.

Clearly she's too young to remember his Presidency. It really speaks poorly of what they're teaching in high school history classes.
