Weld hopes to capture Libertarian Party line(Libertarian is not a bad word in my lexicon)

ALBANY - GOP gubernatorial hopeful Bill Weld is sailing into uncharted waters in New York Republican politics: He's making a major run to line up the backing of the tiny Libertarian Party. Weld confirmed to the Daily News last night that he would "definitely be interested" in winning the Libertarian line

"'Libertarian' is not a bad word in my lexicon," he said, noting one of his favorite expressions is: "I want the government out of your pocketbook and out of your bedroom."

Asked about the party's opposition to the war on drugs, Weld said he'd back medical marijuana, but added, "I'm not for the decriminalization of drugs."

Because Republicans are outnumbered by Democrats in New York by a 5-3 ratio, GOP candidates covet a second ballot line.

Overwhelmingly, their partner has been the Conservative Party. But Weld's more conservative GOP rival, John Faso, has a virtual lock on the Conservative line

The LIBERALtarians are sideways rats who don't have the stomach or honesty to call themselves what they are.

When he ran here, I left the gov slot blank.

Pro pot, pro choice, and pro gun control, there was no way I would ever vote for him.

After winning, he invented the euphemism "fees" to replace "taxes". A real RINO piece of work.

From the discussions with libertarians here, I expect he will be able to make up for it by defending porn.

Libertarian William Weld was also the person who prosecuted so-called tax protestor, Richard Aitken. Richard Aitken was a fireman who was prosecuted for non filing by then U.S. Attorney, William Weld. Richard Aitken was convicted, then his conviction was reversed by the 1st court of appeals in Mass, then in the retrial (because Richard Aitken had already served jail time by then) Richard Aitken decided to plead nolo contendre because he was running out of money. The government had never accepted a nolo contendre plea before this in one of those tax protestor trial cases. Richard Aitken's plea was accepted however and he lives in Rockford, Mass., I believe.

I think the Republican Party is not quite where it ought to be on some issues. The party could stand some improvement.
I think the Libertarian Party holds some ideas which I consider "non-serious". I think Libertarians could modify their positions somewhat and become a credible political party.
I think the Democrat Party has gone off the deep-end and cannot be rescued.

I dream of a day when America has 2 political parties:

Republicans: Socially conservative, diplomatically strong, maybe too loose with money.
Libertarians: Guarding against intrusive government, diplomatically uninterested, conservative on fiscal matters.

"The LIBERALtarians are sideways rats who don't have the stomach or honesty to call themselves what they are."

I would argue just the opposite, that most of today's conservatives don't have the honesty to call themselves what they are; liberals. What conservative in his right mind could make a case for Social Security being viable in any form, have any Constitutional foundation at all? None, but it happens today. The conservative movement has been coopted by government money in the form of student grants and loans, SS, Medicare, corporate welfare, you name it. Any conservative that supports anything other than a Constitutionally limited government is a liberal, and unfortunately, I'd say that 70% of the conservative movement falls into that basket. And when it comes right down to it, what's worse, a "liberaltarian" on the fringe of politics, or a "conservative" who is in the belly of the beast?

I have been a long time conservative and am a very conservative Christian. Over the last few years however I have developed some very libertarian tendencies. Why the slow change?
1) Where have you gone Ronald Reagan? – The Republican Party has abandoned the idea of smaller government, lower taxes and cutting spending. They have gone to Washington and become “politicians”
2) American is now a Socialist State and the Republicans do not seem to be concerned about it at all. Welfare, SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Corporate welfare it just keeps getting worse and worse.
3) Drugs should be legalized – I know this is a hard one to swallow for most conservatives but I encourage everyone to read the information at drugwarfacts.org especially the economics section. I want to see less drug use. The answer is legalization, prevention and treatment not throwing our money away on ineffective law enforcement. (As I get older I find myself aware of the slow erosion of our freedoms. I don’t want people telling me what to do and I especially don’t want the government telling people what they can or cannot do.) (How do you reconcile libertarianism with conservative Christianity? Easy. I want to be free to live and practice my religion the way I see fit. I do not want to see the government telling people how to live because what if the government decides that it does not like some of my behavior. What of the drug users, the prostitutes, the homosexuals? Leave them alone and let God deal with them as He sees fit. If I as an individual can change someone’s behavior, fine. The government needs to stay away.
4) I am a laissze-faire capitalist. Every time that the government interferes its bad news. The Republican party keeps moving farther and farther away.

Currently I feel like a man without a party. If only there was a Pro-life, strong national defense libertarianesque party, I would be a very happy man.

Some Libertarian ideas are pretty good.

But I don't think their position on open borders is acceptable - ESPECIALLY today.

No, not really, socialist RINOS like yourself just need to get over the fact that we don't like big government or regulation of private life.

So what? He was a Democrat once too. Does anyone in his/her right mind think Reagan would be in favor of no borders, no drug restrictions, and/or no laws against prostitution?

Just have the integrity to come out of the rat's closet and scream out who you really are. Liberaltarians never have been anything but hurt to Republicans and help to their masters the rat.

But you're perfectly happy to use big government (i.e., the federal judiciary) to overturn locally established and implemented law.

Bunch of lying phonies.

Libertarian principles of small government and personal freedom are the heart of conservatism, as espouded by Reagan. Get over it. Without fiscal conservatives and libertarians the Republican party is nothing. We're the ones who make or break the party, and that's why the GOP is panicking because they know we're sick and tired of the deficit spending, the massive government expansion and invasion by the federal government into state matters.

Big government RINOS like you belong in the Democratic party. Feel free to join them anytime you like.
